I must admit books are my passion and there is nothing I enjoy more than relaxing with a good book. I went through a phase of buying books as gifts for my friends as I wanted everyone I know, to open their eyes to the pleasure of reading. Dymocks is a godsend as it has books to suit everyone.
My favourite books are the classics as I know they will never disappoint. Best sellers will come and go, but the classics are for all time. There is nothing more tangible and exciting than a book in your hands. As you start to read and the story unfolds, you are caught up in a web which holds you captive and demands your complete attention.
Dymocks on Hay Street has a large stock of books covering a broad spectrum of topics. Here you will find books on art, history, travel, languages, self help and more. In addition to adult fiction, there are many children’s books and books for young adults. Should you not find what you are looking for, the helpful staff will be happy to order it in for you. Join up as a member and you will receive points which will allow you to get discounts on future purchases. You will also be apprised of events held in-​store is such as book signings, sales and special shopping days.

I have gone to Dymocks a couple of times now. I try to support local stores rather than buying on the Internet. I have asked for popular titles and been advised that they are not in stock. They can order them in for me, but it can take 3 – 4 weeks. In this case, online ordering is the way I’ll go.

I was very impressed with my latest visit to Dymocks I was looking for the sequel of my new favourite book (The Hunger Games) for only about two minutes, when a young lady came up to me and kindly asked if I need some help finding something. Considering how big this store is and how many books it contains I happily accepted her offer and she actually took me to the section and explained the different versions available.
This was the best customer service I have received from Dymocks and to further commend them the store was buzzing with people and most staff were also happily helping away, it was really fantastic to see. Why I else I encourage others to the Hay Street Dymocks is because of the quantity and quality of its books; you can easily find any book you want and I love it because it has one of the biggest fashion book selections I have seen in Perth. Expect to pay more for your books here than you do online but remember it’s not the same experience as flicking through the pages and having a short read and getting excited about the read ahead of you.

What sets this Dymocks apart from its sister chain stores throughout the city – such as the much smaller but equally well-​curated one out at Karrinyup, which I have previously reviewed for this site – is its size. The place is sprawling and has a range to match it. I could spend hours drifting aimlessly up and down the aisles of its fiction section, jotting down the names of titles and authors previously unknown to me, reminded of Borders before it went under or Barnes & Noble in the United States.
You don’t have to be a fan of such chain stores to appreciate what the biggest and best of them do. By virtue of their sheer size – you have to fill the space with something – they very often get in the sort of books that smaller, more eclectic bookstores stock exclusively. This is part of the reason so many smaller, more eclectic bookstores are closing, of course. (Did you not see You’ve Got Mail? No? Me, either.) But you tend to forget about that when you’re on your hands and knees in the genuinely impressive fiction section on the second floor of this Hay Street outlet and struggling to make a note on your hand of a book you’d swear the place is stocking by accident.

I love bookshops, and these days they’re a dying breed. Quality book exchanges have survived the internet and the expanding book sections of Target and Big W, but mainstream bookshops couldn’t compete with their prices.
So how the hell has Dymocks survived?
Well, I am a genuine fan of Dymocks stores. Believe me, it pains me to admit my love for a chain bookshop — but there is something so very charming about them.
And Dymocks in the Hay Street Mall has that little something extra. Like all Dymocks, this cute little shop offers great variety, welcoming staff, and a massive collection of cheap Penguin classics for $ 9.95. But it’s also in the heart of the city amongst the cafes, gift shops and food courts, and there’s just something about spending the morning wandering around the mall and browsing through good books.
