History
Established in 1880.
In 1880 Swan River Mechanic’s Institute opened as Perth’s first cultural centre.
In 1909 The Swan River Mechanics’ Institute was renamed to ‘The Perth Literary Institute’.
In response to new State legislation, the Swan River Mechanics’ Institute’s committee invited the City of Perth to take over operations in 1957 and the City of Perth Library officially opened as a free lending library.
In 1963 the Library relocated to Council House and again moved in 1995 to the Law Chambers Building at 573 Hay St, Perth.
Construction for purpose built home for the Library commenced in 2012. The Library relocated to the temporary location at 140 William Street Perth.
On 1 March 2012, the new City of Perth Library was completed and opened to the public. The seven-story state-of-the-art building has been described as ‘the City lounge room and a place to meet, learn, create and engage.’
