I love Sichuan and am fond of the food. It packs a lot of flavour, and I think this place is pretty authentic. Some people will probably not like the food at Chilli King for this reason. It’s spicy, salty, oily and sprinkled liberally with ground Sichuan peppercorns. The latter make your mouth tingle something chronic — something typical of this style of food — and not everyone is a fan of this sensation. The menu is filled with enough odd organs and body parts to make me feel a little disturbed, despite my years in China, but this too is authentic. Guts aside, there were dishes on the menu which made my eyes almost tear up with nostalgia. I’m excited about the dumplings in particular, but I didn’t think I was hungry enough to order them. I enjoyed my noodles and garlic cucumber dish enough that I hoovered most of it, despite the enormous helpings, and had to waddle out. I’ll be back.
