Haigh’s Chocolates

The best chocolates in Adelaide (and Australia too for that matter). We did the factory tour and I found it so interesting to see how so much is made by hand and that it is a true family owned business.
There are quite a few tastings on the tour too and depending on the day, you can see different items being made and packaged. Be sure to check out the seconds chocolates after your tour. These are a bargain and the only difference is that they aren’t quite as pretty as the regular ones!

What can I say about the free factory tour here other than its free and you get chocolate :)
Need more convincing to come along? Well firstly the staff here are well organised and really knowledgable about their product and company history.
For those of you who are unaware they are a bean to bar artisan hand made chocolatier who have a hundred years of family owned history and a proud history.
Did I mention the free chocolate? They don’t skimp either, plus it is without doubt some if the loveliest tasting chocolate I have ever tasted — highly recommended!

My dream for a long time was to drink a cup of pure melted chocolate, scooped from a melted chocolate lake, just like in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. While I now believe it would be choco-​overload, even for a chocoholic like me, the smell of melting chocolate still takes me to my happy place.
No better place in Radelaide for a chocolate factory experience than Haigh’s on Greenhill Rd.
Even if you haven’t pre-​planned (like me!) and aren’t booked into their free factory tour, the source of all Haigh’s premium chocolate visitor’s centre is well worth a visit, after all, at 150 square metres it is probably Australia’s largest chocolate shop.
Before you even reach the front doors the aroma of melted chocolate will draw you in, and if you are lucky the vintage Haigh’s truck will be parked out the front.
Once inside there is a dazzling array of boxed and loose chocolates, information signage, the factory and helpful staff.
Haigh’s have been supporting conservation of the Australian native bilby by donating the a portion of the proceeds of sale to Foundation for Rabbit Free Australia. Haigh’s also support the pandas through donating proceeds of sales to the Adelaide Zoo, and the Murray Cod, donating a portion of the proceeds of sale to Waterfind Environment Fund that works on improving the health of the Murray river systems.
Proudly displayed is their commitment to environmental management, which includes packaging recyclability, energy and water efficiency. Ethical sourcing is also taken seriously, through membership of the Australian Industry Group and World Cocoa Foundation that improves the lives of West Africa cocoa farmers. Due to a loophole (in my mind a gaping, mistaken hole) Haigh’s are ineligible for Fair Trade certification — because they use some Australian ingredients. In my mind, using local ingredients is a great thing!
Haigh’s have a fine array of chocolates made from native Australian ingredients such as the Dark Lemon Myrtle Cream, Dark Quondong, and Milk Wild Lime Jelly. They are available as loose chocolates & in an Australian Selection box with all the above varieties for $ 36.95.
The Dark Strawberry & Pepperberry Ganache is sweet with a hint of green heat from the Tasmanian native pepperberry and is an Australian great chocolate.
It is always worth seeking out the Seconds & Experimental area (on my visit to the right of the loose chocolate counter) where you may find a one-​off bargain like the fruity white chocolate slab I saw.
Upon checking out, the staff will offer to gift wrap your purchase — they even include gift tags — and also a delicious sample, on our visit of the sublimely balanced brandy Christmas pudding.

Polite, attentive, friendly and extremely knowledgeable about their chocolates, the people working here are fabulous! In addition, they keep stuffing you with chocolate!
The chocolate itself is simply delish. I’m a huge fan of dark chocolate and it’s one of the best I’ve tasted in my life.
The tour was a good insight behind-​the-​scenes although no pictures were allowed in the private viewing areas. You can ask as many questions as you like, and probably sample as much chocolate as you want too!
Staff were brilliant. The employees here, together with the chocolate, a sheer star combination.

l love the smell of chocolate in the morning. Lucky, because I live just down the road from this place which conveniently likes to plant chocolate aromatic plants.
Haighs is one of the other great South Australian offerings (up there with Fruchocs and Farmers Union iced coffee) and is now doing well all around Australia.
Their award winning chocolate is made here, and you can do tours around the place to watch the chocolate production and exquisite moulding. They try out new and delicious chocolate ideas at different times of the year and they always give you a little taste of something new at the counter.
Haighs chocolates really are some of the best chocolates you can find, and you can’t get much better then visiting their factory directly. My only gripe? Expensive!

Many come here to visit South Australia’s most well-​known chocolate factory.
Me? I’m a local and come unashamedly for the discounted chocolate selection only available at the factory store.
As you may know, Haigh’s chocolates are spectacularly good and priced to match. The apricot cream truffle is my favourite (around $ 2 each based on weight), so I drop in often to check the factory specials section where you can buy bags of not quite perfect chocolate that tastes equally divine, for a small discount. Last weekend I grabbed a 12 bag of truffles for $ 12.50 and served them with coffee for a morning tea. Everyone appreciated me getting the ‘good’ chocolate and I’m sure no one would have cared (or noticed) that there weren’t the perfect ‘Haighs’ shape.
It’s also a great place to grab Christmas gifts for those people who have everything. In December they often have gift wrapped specials such as a tin of belgium hot chocolate with a mug or boxes of truffles or toy and chocolate packs.
Whether you bring your interstate or overseas visitors here or drop in for a bit of bargain shopping, you won’t be disappointed.

Admittedly the tours here are great for something different to do and see. And this factory isn’t like Cadbury’s — it’s real chocolate making at it’s finest.
Even if you don’t go for a tour you should still go just to be in the shop. The smell is better than that of fresh baked bread. There are always samples of something good on the counter too. But let’s face it, it’s chocolate, it’s pretty much all good!
And apart from all the great wrapped and packaged choccies and gift boxes they also sell both the largest chocolate freckle avaialble (although some other shops sell imposters about the same size) and the most massive chocolate frog imaginable. What better that a gigantic chocolate frog! You have to check them out…

A perfect place to introduce the Haigh’s brand to newbies, the Visitors Centre offers a free tour of the history behind Haigh’s plus patrons can witness a chocolate making demonstration at the premises too.
After the tour (this is the fun bit), everyone enjoys generous servings of chocolate, coffee and tea. Don’t be surprised if your child goes back for more. I’ve seen adults do the same.
Beautiful chocolate boxes, truffles, bars and gourmet products all await to be discovered and devoured.
