I haven’t been here since the new owners and I’m pleased to say the new owner is as passionate as the previous management! Situated in a charming stone cottage with a true Italian Pizzeria feel, Grotto makes seriously good boutique gourmet pizzas. Unlike hit and miss franchise pizza bars run by random casuals, the pizzas here are pretty special. Not quite as good as EST on East terrace on an overall basis but some of the pizzas are slightly better. Firstly they are thin and crispy and very well cooked, secondly the sauce is home made Napoletana. They are not oily or salty and they have imported Peroni red to wash it down with! We went on a busy period on Friday night, normally a period where you can guarantee delays and service issues but the opposite was true, we got looked after better than most retardants! The owner even came up to our table and asked if we were happy! Go for the meatball pizza(roast pork and fennel meatballs with basil and Parmesan) or the«pumpkin, pig & kid» washed down with one of their Italian reds. They even heat up the home made zeppole!

Pizza and only pizza. But they do it well, so it’s okay. I go here if both myself and hubby want pizza. The pizza is really good. Lots of flavour, nice base, quality ingredients, and pretty good value. The only problem is often we can’t agree on what to have. He might want pizza, and I feel like pasta, or vice versa. And since we can’t be bothered going to two places, we go elsewhere. But yeah, if pizza is what you want, this place wont disappoint.

I’ve always held the firm belief that it’s better to be great at one particular skill than to be a jack of all trades, but a master at none. This is a suitable philosophy for the people at Grotto, who have chosen to keep it simple and do the one thing that they do best: simply good pizza. The Salty Pig is a popular choice and, like its restaurant, is nice and simple. It boasts numerous types of ham and is neither too basic, nor too fancy. I tire of restaurants creating overly ambitious meals that never quite hit the mark. Good food doesn’t necessarily have to be exotic or expensive; all it takes is a good understanding of harmonising flavours, and Grotto’s pizzas do just that. Hidden away from the business of The Parade, Grotto is surprisingly quiet despite the relatively short distance from the main street. Though casual, the interior is charming and intimate, and is suitable for a quiet dinner for two or group dining. If you’ve got a specific craving for pizza, I suggest passing on the cafes for a night and giving the masters a try.

This is a mad pizza place to have as your local takeaway but its skillz are not confined to the take home variety. I agree with Lana that the bench seating, cosy, beer swilling eat-in space has great appeal, especially on a cold night and for those summer evenings, there’s a few tables outside. Everything from here is hot, tasty and pretty gourmet. The three pigs actually has ham, bacon and proscuitto. Huge slices of each — so you damn well better be up for making a bit of a pig of yourself if you order it(soz… *groan*). Salty and delicious, you can’t go wrong in my opinion. Definately rivals some of the best pizza in Adelaide, in fact — I think I’m feeling a little peckish now.

Warm and inviting, Grotto is a great way to spend a cool Adelaide evening: just add beer and friends. This is a homely type of pizza place, it doesn’t feel sterile or tacky or fast-foody. With wooden benches, golden lighting, friendly staff and the smell of pizza wafting in the air, it’s a welcoming and casual setting, perfect for small groups or couples. The good thing about Grotto is they just do pizza — unlike a lot of other places, they focus on one thing and they do it well. The Salty Pig and Athenian are making my mouth water just by writing their names, but everything I’ve ever had comes out hot and fresh and tasty. It’s a simple idea, and simply good pizza. If you live in the area they also do home delivery — but I say go in for a chat and a quiet drink.
