Hip café, and I hear the food is good, but the coffee was like oven cleaner — I would advise going across the road for coffee.

Great night at Two by Two. Very good food, and a very nice serving vibe. The lamb was amazing, and my partner told me that the snapper was also spectacular. A fairly limited dinner menu, but that was pretty easy to cope with, because everything else was pretty good. I’ll be back.

We had breakfast here. And sorry, I probably won’t do it again, IMHO there are better places for breakfast in the Northcote area. Having said that, I might try dinner. as the other reviews certainly reflect that Two by Two is likely excellent at night. The single source coffee was fantastic, and the service was excellent, but they haven’t really«got» breakfast. They are trying a bit too hard to be fancy and pretentious, and that’s not is needed at breakfast. At breakfast you just need really«good» basics. The bacon was weird, a very thick cut piece of bacon, almost like thick ham steak — which could have been awesome if it were not so undercooked, toast was tiny(and of the seed bread type), mushrooms were a bit too rich — they just tasted of butter. You get the idea. The place was empty on a Saturday morning. Again, won’t do it again for breakfast.

Two By Two is one of a number of new-ish cafes and restaurants along High Street, Northcote, between the Town Hall and Separation Street. If you’re unfamiliar with this strip, you may need to go past at night to get a true appreciation of how many venues there are here. I’ve been here a few times for coffee, or a beer, and I think it is a great space for proofreading reports(especially with a coffee or a beer). While I have never eaten at Two By Two, colleagues tell me the food is great and from what I have seen it appears to be fantastic. It can be a little noisy as the venue s a bit of a cavern, but not in a bad way. It is a phenomenal space, with an undeveloped outdoor area. Caters to all tastes throughout the day, so a good changing crowd. Good prices and never anything but friendly service.

This is a brand new startup from one of the chefs of The Press club and is the standout startup restaurant of 2012. It’s humble but classy layout combined with elegant food will have you begging for more. The slow cooked lamb shoulder was a favorite within the group as well as the scallops and the Harissa meat balls. Pricing was very reasonable with larger than average portions. Most if the«smaller» items could be shared well between two or three people. My recommendation is to order lots of different items small and large and share everything because otherwise you will leave wishing you had tried more, especially when the wait staff deliver food to other tables!
