I’m shocked to see that Buzzbar has as little Unilocal street-cred as it does . But then again, in my selfish state of mind, if more people found out about this King Street bungalow, it would definitely lose a bit of the ambiance that makes it so special. It’s the fact that despite being so centrally located — just next to Newtown Station — Buzzbar is anything but buzzing. I admit, I’m guilty of having walked pass this seemingly bland street-side café more times than I can remember. The sign in front is by no means spectacular, and with the exception of the two tables outside, there’s really no «draw factor.» Until you get inside. Sitting inside of Buzz feels like you’re sitting at your«cool Aunt’s house.» You know, «Alternative Aunt Linda» with the tattoos and piercings who always tried to sneak you wine when you were a kid? Yeah, it’s like being at her house. The inside area is bright and full of rotating artwork from local artists. Currently there’s a «Newtown-esque» collage collection that adds an alternative edge to your soy latte. Which are delightful, mind you. They have FREEWI-FI and tons of really easy-to-work-at tables so you don’t feel like you’re hogging the place for hanging out hours on end. Which I do. Constantly. The staff is friendly, edgy and young and you can definitely tell that despite having an «out of sync boss,» they’re the ones running the place. The music selections are great, and regardless of if it’s during the day or early in the evening, it’s never really too loud to work, or chat with friends. There are couches too if you’re feeling like lounging! But the BESTPARTOFBUZZ is the leafy outside hideaway, and the fact that the wi-fi reaches all the way out there! Café claustrophobia is commonly had by us Unilocalers, and to be able to sit in a lovely, quaint, outdoor covered area with outlets and heaps of seating is somewhat unheard of. It keeps you from feeling guilty about sitting in a café and writing away when you have the sun tickling your face and keeping you warm. Although I’ve never had the food — due to my budget, definitely not the menu — everything that has gone by has looked lovely! They have a café menu full of salads and wraps with tons of veggie options, and a tapas menu, too. The tapas run around $ 5 or $ 6, which is really reasonable for Sydney. Buzz is also BYO, although they charge $ 2.50 per person for corkage, which is the only downside. Reason being, they’re fully licensed with a fully stocked bar, and place more emphasis on those drinks rather than BYO. Either way, whether you’re in for a morning coffee, an afternoon salad, or an evening skype chat, Buzz is a beautiful King Street hideaway that will let you feel at home for as long as you please… Until you find yourself drunk off your edgy Aunt’s wine and needing to head home.

Although I am not vegan or even vege, inspite of the rubbish service I come here with my vegan mates for the vegan salad. It’s great and is a decent size serve. Everything off the menu I’ve tried has been OK to good. Coffee is decent.

Buzzz Bar has the best cake in Newtown. Big call? Not really, it’s simply amazing. Baked on site, everyday, there is a mouth watering selection including fig almond and lavender cake, baked cheesecake, the ever popular flourless chocolate cake and muffins, a wicked death by chocolate type torte and many, many more. A piece of cake served with a scoop of gelato is $ 10 — and it’s worth every cent. The caramelised fig gelato is a winner, with lots of other flavours like vanilla bean and mascarpone coffee. Buzzz Bar has a relaxed coffee lounge style vibe, with cool couches in the corner, art for sale on the wall, and a kickarse retro coffee machine. There is also a back entrance via Enmore Road, which leads straight to the courtyard. Staff are friendly, and always ready to help out with cake suggestions, the guy last time even gave my mate a taste tester. Buzzz Bar food is also good, but really for me it’s all about the cake. It’s the kind of place where you skip straight to dessert. One of the best things is that you can order wine by the bottle or glass. Flourless chocolate cake with caramelised fig gelato and a glass of shiraz. Heaven!

Funky café: what else would you expect in Newtown? Chilled out and comfortable at the same time, though, and not too-cool-for-you. There’s a back entrance from Enmore Rd, and a small, dark room with a few small tables at that end of the building, separate from the main room. Better for a private meal. We stopped in for some grub before a gig down the road, and really enjoyed it. The menu didn’t have anything unusual — salads and pastas ad grilled meats — but everything was fresh and well-made and tasty.
