Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts

When I graduated at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2005 they had just finished the ‘new’ WAAPA building on the east wing of the campus.
WAAPA has world class state of the art equipment and infra structure ranging in costume design, set construction, lighting, production, rehearsal, recording studio and dance studios facilities combined with the quality and professionalism of lecturers and teaching staff make it one of the best academy of performing arts in the world.
The atmosphere is amazing! What would you expect studying at uni with dancers, actors, artists and musicians?! I used to love the 3^rd year Jazz students Wednesday nights gigs (hope that still on it was awesome!).
To get accepted at WAAPA is hard and competitive but is totally worth it!
Myself (LOL) and a couple of other well know WAAPA graduates including Hugh Jackman, Frances O’Connor, Marcus Graham, William McInnes, Lisa McCune, Lucy Durack, Rachelle Durkin, Emma Matthews, Jamie Oehlers, Eddie Perfect and Tim Minchin (amongst many others), have called WAAPA home. I went back to WAAPA recently to take my daughter to see WA Youth Orchestras’ Children’s Concert and brought so many good memories.
TIP: Do yourself a favor and go explore performances of one of the worlds best performing arts academies!

Please note that I have listed WAAPA under entertainment, not education. This is because I can’t comment so much on their courses as I’ve never done one. What I can comment on, however, is the awesome entertainment they provide the public with. The entertainment is of exceptional quality and at more than reasonable prices. And there is a wide range to choose from, a very wide range indeed.
I have focused primarily on attending dance and musical numbers and even in this small subsection of the WAAPA course list, there is real breadth and depth to the performances.
My parents went and saw an opera, which they thoroughly enjoyed. I have seen two musicals performed by second and third year students and a dance show. Oh, and I was recently involved with a WAAPA flash mob where myself and my friends got to perform too — the best kind of performance!
I must say, acting/​theatre/​dance people often get a really bad rap. I was a bit concerned when I signed up for the flash mob that we’d be taught by a bunch of loud, self obsessed narcissists. Nothing could have been further from the truth. The unusually flexible teachers were kind, helpful, cheery and never condescending in the slightest.
Our flash mob was top quality and lots of fun, as are all the performances I’ve seen by WAAPA students. Check out the WAAPA website for performance dates.
