The University of Western Australia

This ‘university’ plans to house a climate change «consensus centre» which was defunded by the Danish government in 2012. Never have I been so embarrassed by an Australia university. Shame on you UWA.

Look when it comes down to universities there is always going to be the old rivalry. UWA vs Curtin vs Murdoch vs Edith Cowan, blah blah blah, but lets be realistic here, it really is only Curtin vs UWA. Its like Oxford Vs Cambridge… well not quite, but there really are only the two in WA in my eyes.
UWA definitely wins when it comes to bands at the tav, and it wins when it comes to the smarter people who study there and I guess it wins when it comes to the aesthetics of the grounds and then I’m thinking it wins when it comes to cool places to eat and drink in the area and also sleep… ooohhh crap I think UWA just wins, which kinda sucks because I could only get into Curtin.

This review goes out to all school leavers. If you are looking for a uni to attend, don’t fret too much and don’t lament over the situation. Go wherever you go but at least make sure you have friends who go to UWA. If you don’t, get some.
I didn’t go to UWA but I experienced the best part of it in the form of tav parties and toga parties. Soo much fun and like no other party I’ve ever been to since. There’s something about the carefree, beautiful, bohemian grounds of the uni that seem to inspire an endless parade of playful and fun parties, many of them dress up.
My two hot tips are Solid Gold in the tav and the toga party. Although, I’m not 100 percent sure they still do the toga parties… I remember hearing something about liquor licensing being unhappy with the situation. Such a shame. Toga really was beer swilling bohemian rhapsody at its finest.
Anyway, the great thing is that anyone can get tickets to these gigs. They’re usually uni student dirt cheap and epitomise fun.
If you’re now quietly cursing to yourself because you don’t have friends at UWA, simply go to one of their parties. By the end of the night you will.

When I started applying for universities and was considering coming to study in Australia my first (and only) choice was UWA because I had heard so many great things about it from friends already studying there, because of its prestigious reputation and of course because of its spectacular grounds. When I finally arrived at UWA I was absolutely blown away by its beauty and history and was eager to see if their education was as good.
My three years here studying a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Studies and German was actually very fun and instructive. The best thing about Com Studies was the film production units, where students were split into groups and had to work together to come up with a concept, a story line to create a short film. There were lots of other hands on projects like this throughout the course like creating our own website, a digital story using photographs and even creating a board game.
German was also great because of the small class you had a lot more involvement with the other students and lecturers and it wasn’t only learning about the language we also learnt about the history of Germany, watched and critiqued German movies and even conducted interviews and made short films about what we were studying at the time, for instance together with my group we interviewed a German lady who escaped East Germany and fled to West Germany.
I was also able to do many interesting electives like Psychology, Visual Arts, Professional Writing and an internship with an advertising production company (organised by UWA) which all linked to my Communications Studies but in a different and interesting way.
My only let down would have to be I would have liked to do a lot more hands on projects and work experience (which they did not encourage) and after I graduated I was very disappointed because there was no support to introduce us into the industry or work field, especially being an international student this was very difficult. Otherwise I had a wonderful time at UWA and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to study Communications.

I often lament not studying here. I shouldn’t complain really because my uni of choice was incredibly supportive and enlightening. But for the history of UWA, the prestige of their arts degrees in particular, and of course those beautiful grounds, I think it would have be an early twenties well spent. UWA obviously has the strongest reputation among Perth’s universities — and friends who have studied there always speak highly of the education they received. On an aesthetic level, the Sunken Gardens here are beautiful, the gym is old-​school and non-​fussed in a good way, the Uni Club café and Banquet Hall are great eateries and function spaces respectively, and the theatres — particularly Somerville and the Octagon — are top of their game.

I can only offer my review based on the grounds of UWA. I was never a student here and although I sympathise with Cissi’s experience here I unfortunately cannot back her up.
I can imagine that the likes of Edith Cowan University are quite envious of UWA’s grounds in Claremont. They boast a beautiful clock tower visible all along the Stirling Highway. The QUAD is similar to Universities that I attended in Ireland, wall to wall made with stunning stone and bordering green green lawns.
It makes a nice spot for a picnice but as I said I cannot comment on its quality of education.

UWA was my alma mater, and initially I was keen on going because of its reputation as being one of Australia’s best universities.
Instead, what I got out of my experience with UWA is that the supposed prestige of the university matters less than the university’s treatment of their students, and I found UWA to be lacking when it comes to offering support for students.
Academic rigour fluctuated depending on courses. UWA is where I received the most baffling critique of an essay from a lecturer, who said, with a straight face, that my essay was «too intellectual». Some lecturers disliked having to follow requests for special consideration, despite receiving medical advice that it was necessary, and would be quite open with said dislike. Other lecturers dealt with requests for special consideration by ignoring such requests.
UWA is a good university in some areas — just don’t expect to receive much assistance.
