Curtin University

Great modern education with excellent teaching staff and a diverse student body. I can definitely recommend it for any students studying/​looking to study commerce or are coming from other areas and looking to stay in housing. Housing is great with a lot of support and a lot of great people to meet, personally I spent a year in Erica Underwood house when I was 17 – 18 and it really helped me develop as a person and I met a lot of great people. A great place to learn, live and experience.

I actually really enjoy going to University here, it is made a lot more do-​able, by the little cafes and of corse the Tav. Not only is it a nice environment for learning, what you do learn is just as great.
I am still currently studying there and after 3 years I am still enjoying it. I find the ways of teaching effective and interesting. Perhaps it is because I am doing an Arts degree or maybe that is just normal for them. Either way it makes learning all the more intriguing.
The one let down for me is the Hayman theatre, I don’t understand why they got rid of the old theatre and now use this one. I think it is really basic, and just not good enough, considering the amount of Performance students it is a bit poor in my opinion.

I transferred to Curtin from UNSW in Sydney in 2011. I chose Curtin because their degrees are quite modern, compared to UWA’s broad-​based degrees. I liked that for my communications degree I could major in both digital photography and Internet communications, whereas most universities don’t even have either in the communications curriculum. I also found the campus to be quite nice aesthetically, with a big field out the front, ample grass space for pondering big, fluffy clouds, and lots of massive trees to take naps under. Superficial stuff aside, in my experience I’ve had a lot of a lack of support from staff. Some of my tutors are strict with student attendance but lax with their own, unresponsive to emails, and whoever designed their website or enrollment process needs a good poke in the eye socket. I guess it varies from faculty to faculty, but such is my experience. And it hasn’t been that great.
If you’re after a booming social scene, don’t get too excited. There are clubs and societies, but the majority are poorly organized and the party scene is almost non-​existent. The Queer Room is kind of cool though, and has loads of movies and DVDs and books and couches to while away your breaks. Oh, and they also have a microwave and free cereal in the equity space. Heck yes free stuff!
As for the rest? Parking is traumatic, with ticket inspectors vigilant and unrelenting, the gym is good, the TAV is as equally pumping, and I definitely noticed a biiiiiig difference is university fees, with Curtin having a significantly softer effect on my HECS debt.

I earnt my Journalism degree at Curtin back in 2004 – 2006 and it was a pretty enjoyable and fulfilling experience.
The media and information department was filled with teachers and people with whom I am still in contact today and the university still contacts me regularly regarding alumni and vice chancellor’s list events. I still feel a part of Curtin University.
The Library is huge and easy to use and the grounds easy to navigate, if a little stark and industrial in places.
There’s some decent food to be had on campus, I never went in for most of the guild services, particularly the odd Asian restaurant, tavern, and so forth, but it was convenient to have a pharmacy on-​site, and a couple of places to grab a snack.
My only real gripe about my experience at Curtin was that I had one or two slightly oddball tutors for my «MCI units» (who screens these people?) and the parking could be a nightmare.

CURTIN! This is my alma mater and I’m damn proud of it! Even though I only attended it as a post graduate student, I had always had a fascination with Curtin even since my high school days.
I studied in the Media, Culture and Arts school at the Bentley campus. The professors were very knowledgable and experienced, willing to go above and beyond their duty to help the students out (especially after-​hours). Sometimes the facilities in the classrooms were dodgy, or we were stuck in really remote classrooms but I don’t think this is isolated to Curtin only.
There’s a wide variety of places to drink and eat with an array of prices and atmospheres. There’s also a Tav (tavern), which is where most of us spent most of our free time. The library facilities are also sound with plenty of places to study in relative peace. Also plenty of computers both of the PC and Apple kind.
Overall, my favourite University in Perth. UWA huh?

I studied in Curtin’s Media, Culture and Arts faculty and the lecturers and department staff were so supportive. The writing and journalism programs were practical — lots of out-​on-​the-​field assignments and technical projects — and the theoretical work was engaging and insightful. The grounds aren’t particularly inspiring (a lot of red brick and concrete buildings), but what it lacks in visual aesthetic it gains in care factor (at least, that was my experience). Lots of people go to Curtin for the commerce and engineering degrees, but I would argue that the design and communications programs are among the best in terms of the students they churn out. You’ll note most of the writers, journalists, architects and artists around town studied here and will speak highly of their experience too. Cafes are okay, the tav’s a lot of fun, and the student accommodation is exactly what you’d imagine it to be.
