Great coffee! Also a member of the Rewardle family so being a regular pays off. Can get quite busy on the weekends so try to get in somewhat early and the menu is very reasonably priced in comparison to a lot of Perth’s breakfast cafes.

Essentially a bakery, New Norcia serves up exactly what you’d expect — lots of bread and pastries. New Norcia’s sour dough loaf is famous and you can be fairly confident of getting good quality bread when you order a sandwich. I chose the tuna, walnuts, mayo and lettuce sandwich lightly toasted. As expected the bread was delicious and the sandwich was fine for a quick lunch. My long mac was a touch on the bitter side however, so that was a let down. I loved the big table in the middle with its huge floral display, and the jugs of water and glasses for customers to help themselves to. The service was friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. It wasn’t that busy but there’s a lot of competition on the Scarborough Beach Rd strip these days. You can expect a range of pastries, danishes and bread products, along with house made pies and tarts. Very bready indeed. The range of cakes is small and not that enticing. I remember trying one of their Portuguese egg tarts at the Beaufort St Market last summer and being disappointed with the thick, stodgy pastry and small amount of filling. I won’t be back in a hurry; there are heaps of places along the Mt Hawthorn strip serving far more interesting fare, and things haven’t changed that much here since years back when I used to pop in for a coffee and a bite. You really need to evolve and move with the times in the food industry these days. Though the novelty of buying bread made by monks(as it was back in the day) has probably worn off, no doubt there is still a coterie of loyal customers who know which side their bread is buttered on. It’s weathered the storm and although it’s hardly trendy, it looks like New Norcia Bakery is here to stay.

So nice that this place is close to home. Dad had Crispy bacon and eggs(bacon actually came out crispy!) and a long black and I had a large flat white– they use bonsoy(yay!). Their coffee is super tasty and all pretty reasonably priced. I also had a scone from there last week which was I reckon the best I’ve had in Perth! Great selection of jams/spreads & doesn’t leave a chalky feel on your teeth afterwards. The only neg is the staff are a little slow on the uptake when seated.

I used to drop by here and grab coffee on my way to work and it was pretty decent, so we tried it out for breakfast a saturday morning a few weeks ago. Maybe the barista has changed or they were just having a bad day but the coffee was terrible. My friend actually bought takeaway coffee from the place next door to have while we finished our meals. There was 6 of us in total and we all agreed the bread was lovely(to be expected though), and the eggs cooked well. Ham and cheese croissant was nice too. The zucchini and pea fritters were so good but so tiny! Service was very slow /inattentive. Probably wont be back for breakfast unless its just a pastry. Much better coffee elsewhere on the strip

I attended a High Tea at New Norcia Bakies a couple of weeks back for a casual get together celebrating one of my friends getting engaged. As far as High Tea’s go it wasn’t as fancy as some of the ones I have been to in the past but from a value for money point of view this place was great! $ 30 ahead for food and tea was outstanding. There was a great selection of food and gluten free and vegetarians were well catered for. Being a bakery I was very impressed with there being so many savory selections and given I have a fairly non-existent sweet tooth at times this made my afternoon. High Tea can sometimes be a little lost on me also with my various food intolerances but New Norcia Bakery catered for pretty much everyone. The stand out for me were the zucchini fritters and the ricotta and spinach rolls. The High Tea is served in a back room and you have to pre-book given there is only one room and High Tea is held in on a Sat/Sun from 2.00 –4.00pm. There is no liquor licence at this venue but it is worth asking if you can bring a bottle of bubbles if you had something to celebrate,

What better way to start the day than with a hearty breakfast? I ventured to New Norcia Bakery in Mount Hawthorn this morning for a casual breakfast with a friend. The location is nice and central, and it’s easy enough to get parking(although I imagine that had to do with the fact we were there at sparrow’s fart on a weekday). The food here is fantastic — my friend had the toasted muesli with yoghurt and honey. It was delish, and comes served with the most adorable bottle of milk! We shared an approving ‘awwww’ over it. I had the roasted mushies with chevre on sourdough. It was sensational — balanced flavours, and it wasn’t drenched in oil/butter like most savoury breakfast dishes tend to be. The servings are very generous — both my friend and I couldn’t finish our meals. The one fault I could find with the place is the length of time it took to get our coffees. We both ordered long blacks, and the food arrived before the coffee did! Given that the place wasn’t packed out, I didn’t see what the hold up was… Nevermind, as when they did finally arrive, they were deeeeevine. Nice and strong, not burnt or bitter…

Continuing the search for the gold up of coffee at the end of the rainbow, I checked out New Norcia. Staring at the top of the cappuccino, the foam was everything I had hoped for and the first few sips tingled my taste buds in all the right ways but unfortunately this did not last for the whole cup but it was a vast improvement on the coffees I have had so far in Perth. I missed out on the breakfast menu due to sleep trumping need to eat so I tried a simple toasted ham and cheese sandwich which had a terrific balance in flavours. If I manage to get up early enough I would return to try the breakfast menu.

Had breakfast at the Mount Hawthorn establishment this morning, it was fresh, fast and tasty. I had the mushies on toast with a fresh juice and will return for that breakky again.

Bought three different types of bread on this occasion. Product quality is OK but I feel I’m not getting enough unique value for the unique cost. Service staff on the Australia Day long weekend holiday Monday were far from happy to be there. Pity, front of shop staff can be the difference. My preference for fresh bread remains Lawleys.

You can always be assured of freshness and flavour at New Norcia Bakery. It’s one of the few cafes that do sandwiches really well — this is mainly due to the exceptional quality and range of breads. You can try the bread in its pure form too, by ordering the Selection of Breads with olive oil and balsamic, or New Norcia dip. They have a great range of flavour combinations in toasted sandwiches, my favourite being the pesto with Roma tomatoes and cheese. The café is in a great location to meet for breakfast or lunch, with a street full of nice little boutiques to wander through. If you’d like to impress someone for afternoon tea, choose from the takeaway bakery selection — sweet tarts, pain au chocolat, croissants, apple and custard Danish plus much more. The bakery also takes catering orders, but you need to give them two days notice for big party requests.

What an exceptional mix of café and bakery, it is truly delectable. The range of breads in the bakery, sour doughs, bread and butter puddings, ciabattas and oddly my favourite, their old stone mill loaf, is just astounding. The fact that you can have these with your meals in the café is unreal. The toasties(which are my favourite) are great because unlike most places, the best part of the meal is the bread, which adds a completely new and tantalising dimension to the meal.

When I was a kid, I used to visit New Norcia with my father on school holidays. We’d be returning from a big trip we used to call ’round-up’, where Dad sold produce to country folk as far as Eneabba, toward Geraldton. Our stop in New Norcia was always appreciated. Such a quaint town with rich heritage, beautiful architecture, and a bakery that’s worthy of international recognition. All grown up now, I’m regularly eating New Norcia Bakeries bread, since my sister owns a couple of cafes and she insists on ordering the best for her panini and bruschettas. When I’m cooking myself, and since I live close to Mt Hawthorn, I’m often in here pondering freshly baked loafs and rolls. Each of New Norcia’s breads has a distinctive flavour, from their simple baguettes to their more savoury slices of heaven. Their olive, rosemary and sundried tomato sourdough is heaven!

This may sound narcissistic but they were definitely thinking of me when they planned their breakfast menu here. Everyone loves going out for breakfast but as seen as Im not a love of big meaty breakfasts I get a bit sick of sitting at the same old haunts eating greasy eggs. A variety of breads to choose from, toasted with butter and jam. A glutenous heaven for me. Match it with a decent coffee and I’m yours New Norcia.

I recently enjoyed some of the best coffee I have enjoyed enjoying in this city. I enjoyed it at New Norcia Bakery in Mount Hawthorne after an afternoon spent boozing it up at Casa Bianchi and the Paddington Ale House. We all ordered different coffees and all of them were excellent. As should be fairly clear by now, the only thing I drink is double espresso, and the one I got here was right on the money: a flavourful single-origin grind(I’m not sure from where) that was almost perfectly extracted. What was impressive – it sounds strange to say so – was the fact that it wasn’t perfectly extracted the first time. I didn’t need to point this out: the barista did it for me, promising to try again if I wasn’t impressed. She hadn’t extracted the single origin that day and was worried that, like the first pancake, the first extraction might not be the best. This is the sort of commitment to quality – she didn’t care about me, you realise, only about the coffee – of which I for one would like to see more.

New Norcia is Australia’s only monastic town. Located 132 km north of Perth, The Benedictine Community was established in New Norcia in 1847. In 1993, New Norcia Bakeries were granted permission to use the original wood-fired oven at the monastery(installed in 1886) to produce authentic artisan breads. In 1996, another 100 year old wood-fired oven was relocated and recommissioned in the Perth suburb of Mount Hawthorn. With the two ovens working in tandem to produce a range of breads, pastries, biscuits and cakes, New Norcia Bakeries soon established a reputation as Western Australia’s finest artisan bakers and earned a place in my heart as one of my favourite bakerys in Perth. They are famous for their sourdough and nutcake. My personal favourites are the olive sourdough, which is amazing for making bruschetta and also the bread and butter pudding muffins, which are a slice of heaven, but definitely one to avoid if you’re on a diet!
