Industrial park cafes normally make my stomach turn. It evokes images of aging signage, burnt-to-crap bad coffee and comic sans menus. So when we pulled up to check out Odyssey, it’s even more astounding that tucked next to a couple of old furniture stores is one of the coolest coffee roasters I’ve come across. Filled strictly with in the know locals(and their guests in this case!), Odyssey is a bare bones coffee shop with a love for only two things; coffee and the The Notorious B.I.G. Not taking themselves too seriously, there are little references to their fandom in things like the cup sizes(comes in Biggie or Smalls) and their tip jar cracked me up too. What they do take seriously is their coffee. They are clearly passionate about their craft and it shows in their product. The staff were super lovely and happy to chat away, turning this warehouse into an inviting space with their warmth. This was the final stop of our coffee tour and almost at peak heart-rate, we couldn’t resist just one more(delicious) coffee and took a 1kg bag home back to Melbourne for good measure. Seek this one out.

You know what Milton doesn’t have enough of? Coffee shops. And not just any old«serve the local office works mud sludge coffee shops» proper«I take this coffee businesses seriously and am proud of my craft» coffee shops. The only other that springs to mind is Bunker. Sharing my allegiance on Friday morning, I stopped into The Odyssey Project for a meeting with two other coffee-loving friends. What this bare warehouse lacks in interior decoration compared to other cafes that might have a «state of the art hand designed fit-out»(fact: I like it like this. It’s rustic. They’re still setting up and we get to come along on the journey with them) it makes up in quality coffee. And the reason for the warehouse setting? This isn’t just any ol’ coffee shop. They’re roasting a house blend on site. Check the machine out. It’s pretty sexy. You might remember these guys from such local haunts such as Grindhouse in Stones Corner and now they’re adding a bit of coffee culture to the Inner-West. My flat white and long black were enjoyable. The long black(as is most often the case) allowed the flavours of their roast to really shine. It is subtle, gentle on you as you sip your first coffee of the morning. Oh and(wait for it). There’s no food. This is all about the coffee, yo! They’re also doing pour overs, cold press and filter coffees. My only hope is that locals and fellow coffee nerds throw their support behind this latest addition to the Milton area. It’s a worthy endeavour and hey they even sell coffee gadgetry! I’ll take one metal mesh aeropress filter please.
