Well, for some reason I had this strange desire to go and check this pub out, which was odd because North Sydney doesn’t really have all of the interesting attractions that the other side of the harbour does. However, what is good about this place is that it is right next to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In fact if you have just walked over it you can step in here for a nice cold beer. Actually, I probably should say craft-beer because it happens to be a craft-beer bar. They also offer tastings if you can’t decide what you would like(though a paddle is $ 15.00). If found this to be a pretty quite place with a nice outdoor, non-smoking deck out the back. Even better, it is just across the road from the railway station, so you don’t have to walk back across the bridge.

Had lunch here with a friend on 21st of May 2015. The menu is not exciting just steaks, schnitzels and fish with chips though oysters are available($ 14 per dozen are cheapest in Sydney). We both ordered medium Scotch Fillet Steaks plus chips and salad at $ 15. With a garnishing of chilli prawns @$ 5. Both steaks were perfectly cooked and tasted fabulous with the prawns adding a bit of fire. The service was quick. This is honest pub food.

While staying in Kirribilli on holiday, we stopped in to watch the World Series. The management and staff couldn’t have been friendlier. We had drinks and food several times each time we found the food quite delicious. The place will aways be warmly remembered, it helps that the SF Giants won too.

I have a storied history with this grand ol’ girl. Used to come here for beers after Year 12 with our form master Keith«Yoda» Chester. Played trivia here with my Auntie Cherie, a social socialite who can drink red wine like a pirate. And last night I hit up $ 1 oysters after seeing an ad on their website. The young girl manning the bistro register had been in a conversation that very definitely involved the words …“oh my god, she’s not even that hot” before serving me with a big friendly smile, and while she didn’t know about the oysters and had to ask the chef, she brought ‘em out all pretty-like on their bed of roquette and was kind enough not to stick around while I ate them because that would’ve been kinda weird. Head down, no eye contact. Its old, it’s got character, and you’ll always find some weirdos in here worth talking to. Come for trivia, best on the north shore.

It’s a Friday night and I’m heading over to Milson’s Point for a drink with some friends, I seldom come out this way, but we are headed to the Kirribilli Hotel and therefor the trip is necessary. Drinking the beers on special makes for a slightly cheaper night, but the neighbourhood isn’t exactly one where value is favoured. It’s a classy area and the drink prices reflect this. The place is packed with people celebrating the end of another work week. Sport on the tele and the weekend on the mind. We find some seats out the back and pounce on them swiftly before they vanish. There are pool tables in the front room and a dining area to the side, but we just sit out the back, down the beers, chat and catch up on each others lives. A waitress is even doing the rounds and taking peoples drink orders from their tables, a service we keenly take advantage of. After a few more beers and a couple more conversations, we leave the Kirribilli Hotel, not for greener pastures, but for different ones.

I’m not sure if the Prime-minister ever has a drink at The Kirribilli Hotel when staying at the lodge but it’s still a popular watering hole for locals in the area. Maybe that is why it’s popular! It’s a bit of an old school pub that has had some minor makeovers over the past few years. There are a couple of areas inside to grab a seat or if you’re there on a Saturday night you can even have a dance to the live band. If you want something to eat there is a nice bistro and beer garden area plus a downstairs bar if you need to escape it all. Right out front are the steps that lead you across the Harbour Bridge but unfortunately there are no harbour views from inside. If you have been pounding the pavement around the north side of the harbour, it’s a handy spot to drop in for a drink and rest those weary legs.

There aren’t a huge number of neighbourhood pubs servicing the lower North Shore area — from Cremorne down to Milsons Point, it’s The Oaks, The Commodore and the Kirribilli Hotel that run the drinking monopoly. The atmosphere at KH is always good — locals stop by for lunch and there’s a consistent after work crowd — but the interiors at this little hotel seem to be a bit confused. It looks as though they’ve modernised the carpet and furniture in recent years around the main area, yet the boxy dark timber bar is awkwardly antiquated. If you’re headed here to sample some of their quality bistro fare(think the standard hotel menu featuring a couple of salads, a vego pizza, a pan-seared fish and a selection of steaks), best to snap up one of the tables in their stylish terrace section. The covered, tiled space with partially open walls is breezy in summer and toasty in winter thanks to well-placed mushroom heaters, so you can dine semi-alfresco all year ’round.

The Kirribilli Hotel sells itself as a ‘true local’ and for a while it was indeed my local. Of all the pubs I’ve been to in the area, it’s the most deserving of having this title. It’s an easy going pub for blue collar and white collar alike. It has an art deco style façade and lots of wood panelling on the inside. It’s not fancy but not shabby either. It even smells like a pub. Beery and carpety. Working close by, long liquid lunches were occasionally interrupted by meals from the Bistro. The food is good traditional pub fair. Chicken burgers, wedges, fish and chips — it’s a fair guess that the fryer is the most heavily utilised equipment in their kitchen but it’s all really tasty and plated with fresh garnishes. Good on the pocket too. Quiz nights here on a Wednesday were unmissable when run by a comedian called Haskell but I think he’s moved on now which is a shame. The night is popular still though, so call ahead and book a table.
