I spotted this place while walking back from one of my food truck adventures in Walsh Bay and decided that I had stumbled across a top secret neighbourhood gem. The corner café is tucked away safely off the footpath of tourists but only a block down from The Lord Nelson. I bookmarked the find for a special day. I approached the adorable café from the east, passing by the locals sitting outside, even giving a little wink as if to say«it’s okay, your secret is safe with me», and I stepped inside. The first draft of this review got nasty here, and since going back, I don’t think it was a fair assessment. Rewrite below. The coffee here is nice and strong — 3 stars from this picky reviewer —(although the beans had been ground a bit too fine on my second visit, resulting in a slightly powdery taste), and they do offer a decent selection of sandwiches, wraps, and salads for under $ 10 on the menu that are probably worth checking out. Cheap, good, and cash only. The thing is, Argyle Café really is a neighbourhood gem– I just forgot I had entered a different neighbourhood.

This café has lots of potential. Set in a rather obscure part of Millers Point it is a little off the beaten track, yet still has great views over Barangaroo and Sydney Harbour. From the outside the café looks like its got a lot of charm so I decided to stop in for a coffee. Well, it took a little while before anybody acknowledged me but then I managed to order a latte. The barista wasn’t rude but I did feel a bit rushed then a bit ignored as he continued to speak to his friend in another language. As I waited I checked out the café and honestly it’s better from the outside than in. I clocked another patrons food and it looked pretty basic. I wasn’t expecting anything from my coffee but as I sipped it walking out I thought, well, enduring the service might have been worth it after all — best coffee on the block!
