I went today to look at the electronic sale Myers is currently having as I am in the market for a TV. I was impressed with the sales guy as he was quite informative and provided me more facts than I received from Harvey N n my last visit. The store is clean and laid out well — reminds me of Macy’s in the USA.

Really only worth shopping here if there’s a sale or you can’t shop online. The new building is too big and white, like a giant Apple store, and I’m convinced the elevators are just for show. I must have waited 5 minutes for the elevator and nothing happened; it must be a trick they use to make you walk through every floor.

I just love walking through the beauty bars as you walk in. Very service-oriented… meaning you can get your brows done, nails done, make-up done, hair done… all by way of introduction to the products on offer. Myer hot tips generally: RED signs = bargains. 75% off already reduced price racks are the best and often below cost price, however these are mostly picked through… but worth a look all the same :-)

THe only time I visit Myer is because the Wife has an appointment downstairs at one of the cosmetics counters. I normally head straight upstairs to kill the 15 minutes watching the progress on the Emporium next door. It’s strange because I miss that old Myer building. THe new store was a much needed change for Myer Melbourne. It seems to make sense with the layout now. But I do find that the things I need are in stock at other Myer stores, like Chadstone or even better Southland.

Myer is such a conundrum when it comes to shopping. They just outfitted their store with a new look last year and I’m not really a fan. For a flagship store, this is a serious disappointment. Being a man, I am accustomed to struggling for selection in department stores but Myer is ridiculous. They don’t feature much in the way of variety as every brand they stock seems to overlap one another in selection. The prices are a bit steep for the labels and the quality. If you’re looking for menswear, don’t waste the time in Myer, head to somewhere like Harrold’s or another smaller and more specialised store. The electronics section on the top floor is so overpriced. The only thing worth making the trek up that far in the store is for the views. The cosmetics section on the ground floor is so cluttered that you almost question whether you want to even make the effort. There are plenty of staff around to answer any questions but I think you can do better elsewhere.

Is it possible to give someone negative stars on Unilocal? If so, I’d be piling them on Myer. Prices that are beyond all reason coupled with the worst customer service that I have encountered in dozens of countries. Myer is most definitely not«my store»… About the only exception to our extreme distaste to Myer is the independent staff at some of the makeup counters. My wife is a fan of many of the brands carried on the ground floor of Myer, and has a website where she regularly reviews products(and the service she received obtaining them), and Myer is a regular pit-stop to pick up new things to review. There is absolutely no excuse for poor customer service, and in this age of international shopping options, Myer should take heed. Re-train staff, or, better yet, dump them and get some people in who understand the modern sales market.

I like Myers. I have always had a good experience with SAs here esp Kiehls counter, Shoes dept, small appliance dept, bed linen dept. Most SAs here take time to understand what you need and help out. Sometimes even when I’ve been only looking at things not buying, they have been most nice. I do wait for sales and they have them a lot. As far as prices go, most brands are priced similarly to what they have in their flagship stores. I wouldn’t buy deco items here, but then again I prefer arty/crafts sometimes kitschy stuff, so Markets and small boutiques are where I’ll go.
