Wasn’t expecting much but gave this place a go before going to watch Star Wars at the Palace. Looked at a few Japanese restaurants in the area before settling here. The main reason we chose this place is because we finally found a Japanese restaurant that has pork Katsu Don and Pork Curry on the menu. For some reason most of the food in Japan was pork, but as usual Australia generally is against pork for some reason and nearly always substitutes it with tasteless chicken. However the flavour of the Katsu Don was great, but the pork itself was way over cooked. The meat had pretty much dried out and they seem to have used a pork schnitzel cut of meat rather than a pork cutlet cut. For the curry, again the pork was well over cooked but also the curry flavour itself was nothing remotely similar to any curry I have had in Japan. Rather than tasting like a Japanese curry, this one tasted like a watered down, corn starchy, packet curry that reminds me of an apricot curry from the packet without adding the apricots. Both dishes were around $ 13 each which seemed ok before the food came out, but afterwards my wife and I thought $ 7 each would have been a more fair price for the food we received. Their miso soup was excellent but unfortunately I don’t order main meals to get excited by the miso soup. Also surprisingly they only accept cash. I would understand they only accept cash if the food was cheap, but at +$ 13 a meal(pretty much the average price for an average restaurant meal in the area for the size and quality of the food), I’d expect a credit card machine. If I’m going to pay double of what the food is actually worth, i’d at least like to earn some velocity points while the restaurant is hiding their income from the tax man!!!

Norton Sushi Plaza is tucked inside the Norton St Plaza opposite Coles. I’m not really one for shopping centre dining(the exception to the rule being the food court at the top of Bondi Junction Westfield) but my friend raved about this place so I willingly trailed along to partake in what they had on offer. Unfortunately we were both disappointed– the vegetable tempura was gluggy, the agedashi tofu was not horrible but nothing to write home about, and my opinions on shopping centre dining remain unchanged.
