This place has been here for ever it seems. Been here twice, generally on event nights(birthday, Christmas dinner). The food really is quite good and cannot fault it. I do love the service given there doesn’t seem to be a native Australian amongst the lot(reminds me of Rosso Pomodoro in Balmain in this facet), however the Italians are not known for their smiling nature in service. I have to agree with the other reviewer, it is seriously noisy. Once the place gets to about quarter full, the sound starts bouncing off the ceilings and walls(glass fronted doesn’t help) and when you throw some noisy kids in the mix, everyone is trying to scream over every once else’s noise. Vicious cycle. Grappa could address this with some baffling in the ceilings and back walls, but they probably think it adds to the charm.

If you want a quiet night out don’t go to Grappa on a Saturday night. They get quite busy and the noise bounces off all the hard surfaces. I went with some friends from overseas and we had to scream at one another all night. This restaurant was opened about ten or twelve years ago and it has now grown up and settled down into its own atmosphere. There are several seating areas, lounges near the bar, the conventional restaurant seating and a verandah area outside which is lovely in the warmer months. The wine list goes from well priced to the ridiculous and is full of very good quality wines and some exceptional wines from Italy. There’s an incredible list of other wines(Australian, New Zealand and French) all fairly priced. The menu for main meals tarts at $ 30 for spatchcock and it is exceptional. The most expensive meal is $ 39.50 and for that you get a share of snapper cooked in a traditional Italian way — crusted in salt. It takes a long time but hey, all good things come to those who wait. If you want something a little more laid back they do have pizza, but I think if you’re offered the opportunity to go somewhere like this in the suburbs, I would go for a proper meal. It’s worth it.
