Specialties
Our boutique budget hotel fills a gap in the accommodation market, catering for guests looking for something more upmarket than a backpackers hostel, and less sterile than a chain hotel.
Each of the seventeen rooms is unique, decorated with original art, vintage touches, and a personal vibe. Located in a gorgeous building in Hobart’s inner city, the Alabama provides the perfect base to explore all that Hobart has to offer.
While there are no rooms with en suite bathrooms, there are a number of male and female showers and facilities on each floor. By keeping the layout as it is, we can keep our rates lower for guests and maintain our «boutique budget» descriptor. The building is in its original walkup condition, which means there isn’t an elevator. Nor are there televisions in the rooms, or fluffy robes, but we do have some very friendly staff and super fast, free wifi for staying guests.
We have excellent coffee and teas available for purchase, as well as a wide selection of local and imported beer, wines and spirits. The bar is perfect for a drink before heading out for a meal at one of the many excellent Hobart eateries nearby.
While we are licensed to sell drinks to the public, it is primarily a guest space. It is not available to the public for large groups, work meetings, functions or events. We do not take bookings and do not hire it out privately. We welcome smaller groups of the public for a quiet drink, subject to our small capacity. The bar closes at 9pm daily.
History
Established in 2013.
The building was erected in the late 1830s but didn’t open as a hotel until 1867, while the deco façade was most likely added in the 1930s. The Alabama has traded under the same name since opening, which it apparently received after the USS Alabama sailed into Hobart’s port and impressed the hotel’s first owner. It’s believed to be the first hotel in Hobart to have a take-away bottle shop.
After being closed to travellers for almost a decade, the Alabama re-opened its doors in the spring of 2013.
