Elmar’s Smallgoods

As a meat lover, I found this shop delightful! There was a lot of options of homemade sausages and such. Their hot food selection was great too. Will have to come back one of the Fridays I’m free to try the roast pork roll!

If you consider yourself a lover of meat, you have to come here. It really is that simple. Cured meats and sausages galore! Also everything is made on site because that is how these wonderful sausage making Germans roll. I also suggest checking them out for lunch, the sandwiches are great and the homemade rolls they serve are to die for!
This is a family owned business that has been in Highgate since ’87 and it was the success of this shop that led to the opening of Elmar’s in the Valley another great location out in Swan Valley where the German goodness continues. They even brew their own German beer. I love this family business and am very happy that they decided to settle in Perth so that we can enjoy the best of what German food has to offer!

Popped in here because I saw people leaving the premises with delicious looking sandwiches in their hands. I thought they only sold sausages! How wrong I was.
Sure enough, they had a full buffet full of sandwich condiments! I ordered a white roll with mayo, turkey, tomato, cucumber, pickles and sundried tomatoes. Their mayo is homemade and everything looks so fresh and delicious. Elmar’s, while the choices are simple, is a true deli!
The sandwich was a-​freaking-​mazing. It’s like golem and my precious kind of good. I came back on the weekend to order another and sadly, they don’t do sandwiches on the weekends due to the sausage sizzle. So I ordered a sausage. When in Rome!
While I prefer the epic sandwiches, their sausages on a white roll covered in sauerkraut are pretty damn delicious. Hence, Elmar’s can do no wrong! I won’t be going anywhere else for my sandwiches from now on!

Great quality sausages without all the nasty fillers that cheaper options employ. We are a fan of the bratwurst, but they are a very finely ground sausage compared to the ‘bratwurst’ we used to get in the USA. Also, when you boil them in beer (as many Americans do prior to grilling) the casings pop open, so they don’t look so pretty.
Also, be warned that they are a cash only shop and they are not cheap (~$ 2/​bratwurst). They do have an ATM in the shop but last time I was there at the end of the day it ran out of cash, so best to plan ahead if possible.
The owners/​operators are indeed German (or at least have distinct German accents), and you will find a lot of continental specialty items. All in all a great little butcher/​small goods shop.

A friend of mine, knowing my love of meat, introduced me to Elmar’s Smallgoods in Highgate and they now have my eternal gratitude. Elmars was created by a two german migrants who saw that Perth was lacking in the traditional German and European smallgoods that they enjoyed at home. They have all the meat you could dream of, with their kransky, bratwurst, german salami and more. Even better all their meat products are gluten free. Make yourself a rock star to your coealiacs friend and share this store with them. Elmars also do a range of gourmet cheeses, belgian chocolates and more from Europe.

The best cheese Kransky this side of Perth! Its hard to turn down the sizzling sausages on the Saturday morning, I always make the mistake of going down at this time usually hung over from the evening before –Your belly rumbles as you walk past and you make the wrong move and look into the large bbq thats it — its all over red rover you are hooked! You just cant beat the cheese kransky to soak up the booze.
This is a great meat deli and I think its pretty well priced. I bought some very inferior sausages from Woolies once and there were more expensive than here and definietly not of the same quality. The hardest part is making your decision, I can personally recommend ALL the sauasages they are fab. Grab a jar of sauerkrat, and a jar of german mustand from the shelves here, plonk yourself down on a winters evening to sausages, sauerkraut, mustard and boiled spuds! I can guarantee it will hit the spot ohhh and dont forget a nice pint of wheat beer to swill it all down.

I’m really not a big meat eater at all so I’ve never felt compelled to shop at Elmar’s even though I live very close. I’ll admit I have always been slightly lured by the smell of sizzling sausages, which they put on every Saturday morning however (great brunch option after a night on the sauce).
If you’ve ever been to Germany though, you must come here; you will be instantly transported to somewhere in Deutschland. There are German small goods in great abundance; horseradish, biscuits, gingerbread, mustards, pickles and marzipan. Elmar’s also serves as a butcher shop selling a wide range of fresh cut and packaged meats — the sheer smell of meats is extremely effective at kindling European holiday nostalgia.
