BROWNRICE?!? BROWNRICE?!? WHATINTHEBLAZESISTHISNONSENSE?! In all my years, I have never come across brown rice in my precious Asian meals. I understand it’s healthier, but fuck that! I want some delicious fluffy Jasmine rice that goes great with everything! I should note that I’m not rating 2 stars just because I wasn’t a fan of the brown rice. Positives: ~ I do have to admit that the customer service was fairly good. Everyone was nice and they also take EFTPOS. ~ The atmosphere is really casual and laidback, which I like. Celia M. describes it great — it’s nice and relaxed. ~ BIG portions. Food: I ordered the Spicy Salmon Bento, which included Miso Soup, Assorted tempura, Mushroom & Potatoes, Brown Rice, and Spicy Salmon — all for $ 15. The portions are pretty huge which made it well worth the money, but the meal itself was not very delicious. There were no real flavours, just one-dimensional spices. And what kind of authentic Japanese restaurant serves Mushroom & Potatoes anyway?! Ohayo is what you get if Vegie Bar did Japanese food. I don’t really like Vegie Bar. Fucking brown rice.

Another culinary staple for locals and students in Hawthorn Ohayo does a roaring trade and has been around for a while. The great service, relaxed atmosphere and quality food make it an all round winner and a great place to catch up with friends or grab some quick Japanese food in between uni breaks. Fresh sushi, generous bento boxes, delicious rice and noodle dishes can all be found here, and while the setting is modest and minimalist — the atmosphere is one of calm and relaxation; the perfect break from the busy uni life or a hard day at work. Expect fast and friendly service, the wait staff are always great here and I’ve never had a problem with the quality of food or felt as though I have been ripped off. This is a great place to try if you are in the area or indeed, even if you just want to find a great Japanese restaurant.

Some people have an issue with eat out by themselves. When you’re a university student you are often put into the position where you are in-between classes and you have no choice to eat out by yourself, this is perhaps the reason why I don’t mind or perhaps it because when I come here and I wait for my food the excitement alone is enough to keep my mind occupied. They have all the Japanese classics here including sushi, bento boxes, katsu don, and everything else in between. The service is great and as always the food is cooked to perfection with beautiful presentation.
