Mario’s Coffee Shop is an institution and allows you to partake in various blends of coffee from all around the world. Coffee is awesome and brewed perfectly, made up the back of the shop by some young dudes that are hip, youthful however friendly and respectful.(I sound old, however I am not that old, sub 50) the shop is more a coffee shrine to the family Patriarch Mario who was an icon in Hawthorn and his spirit lives in in this family run coffee dwelling that has even connected to the modern world offering free wifi! Enjoy…

I like this place and their coffee… only complaint is that they should serve breakfast! For such a large space, you would think that they could fit a restaurant in there. Maybe it’s because there’s basically a small earthquake every time the train comes by lol. Perfect place to just sit for hours and study/chill. It’s pretty cute and hip, with exposed brick, vintage prints, and sanded wooden tables, and the baristas are really laid back as well.(Actually I feel like everybody in Australia is hahaha.) Good place to just hang out(and sometimes run into your professors)

There is a rustic charm about this place. It’s the traditional but its hip. Beautiful aroma of freshly ground coffee and the sweets to die for. I like tradition and this place has been around for two genarations — maybe more. My latte came near perfect! Can’t argue about that :)

There are countless cafes along Glenferrie Road that try to cater to the university students who line the strip. Mario’s doesn’t just offer a great venue for large groups or secluded catch ups. It also boasts good coffee and some fantastic service. I stopped by here the other day after having been absent for a while to make sure it was the same. Thankfully I was greeted with the same friendly service and efficiency that make the wait staff and baristas here so great. This is one place where you won’t need to add sugar to your coffee — they make it with such care that in all my caffeine fixes from Mario’s I have never had a burnt coffee. They offer discounts for students, and the atmosphere is laid back and very friendly. It may look trendy from the outside, but Mario’s is relaxed and just about great coffee and good company.

One cold, rainy day while walking alone Glenferrie, I was hit with the urgent need for a coffee. There were a lot of places to choose so I decided to be logical about it. Mario’s Coffee House had a dark, intimate atmosphere inside. Coffee machines and beans on display inside. Sounds like a good choice I thought. My coffee turned out to be very average. Whether it was because I really needed a coffee fix that day, or whether it really was a disappointing cup, I left feeling unsatisfied.

A great chill out and social mecca along Glenferrie Road. Love the range of chocolate and other treats you can buy and observe just before the main counter. You would be forgiven for thinking that your a little kid in a candy store once again in a chic, bohemian locale. This aint no fantasy; because when you are truly present and feeling this fun: I hate to break this to you; but you really are a(big) kid in a candy store. Wait until you try their coffee. Definitely to die for. I am salivating for it right now. Don’t know what that special ingredient is in particular; or it might just be the environment which is oh so Melbourne. It is popular and this establishment gets rather busy; and thus that common saying that ‘patience is a virtue’ definitely rings true here. Good things(or rather good food) happens to those who wait. And wait they will. Yours truly had to wait for service here. It is like a lucky dip for those coveted indoor seated couches. However this establishment is funky yet cool. Worth visiting to be appreciated for sure. Their coffees must be tasted to really appreciate Melbourne’s café society.

When i did a little teaching gig at Swinburne this was the place that our course coordinator would designate we meet in. Our lecturer and team of tutors(of which I was one) would discuss the trials and tribulations of trying to get the best out of our undergraduate students whilst over a coffee for a good 45 minutes. The place is extremely chilled and the front window is a great spot to relax and have a good people watch. They do excellent coffees and the staff are really friendly. This was often my hangout if there was time to kill in between tutes. A cosy environment and a good place to proverbially ‘shoot the shit’.

Just under the bridge near Glenferrie station, do not be fooled by the gaudiness of the purple sign out the front, this place is actually really nice. Upon entering you greeting by two counters along the right. The first is for lollies and candies of several varieties, the second for coffees and other drinks. Established in 1980 as both a café and confectionery shop, the store has a huge selection of imported coffee and confectionery to choose from. Memorabilia of the establishment’s history adorns the walls — from coffee machines to newspaper articles. One special corner in particular contains a collection of tragic postcards sent by workers and lovers of coffee from around the world. Magical. Reasonable priced coffee and all manner of sweet pastry bits available, Mario’s is well worth the stop on the way to somewhere else, be it five minutes or a few hours. The vibe of the place may have you wasting an afternoon here.
