Crap service, crap layout, crap whiskey, overpriced. Bartenders didn’t know which whiskey was what on the three palate tasters. Didn’t know how to mix a whiskey sour or old fashioned. Would rather drink johnny red than Nant.

Whilst it was a brief visit to Nant, I’m already planning an extended(and very drunken) second visit. I mean, seriously, I have to least attempt to try even a third of the whiskey’s available on that back wall. The bar is certainly my style, comfy leather armchairs, a glowing back wall of spirits, and friendly, quirky staff. Seat yourself inside or out and someone friendly will assist you with a menu and anything you need. Highlighted of course in the menu are the fine whiskeys from Nant, including a tasting board of three to try. The wonderous wall of whiskey inside is not on the menu, so you’ll have to go and have a look(which you WILL want to do.) They also offer a small selection of wines, beers and nibbly’s. First time with whiskey and want some help? The staff are indeed knowledgeable and I was informed by one that yes, he has tried every single whiskey they offer. You’ll probably want to try one of Nant’s own whiskey’s as they have recently been placed in the top 50 whiskey’s in the world. No small feat to accomplish, and it is certainly well deserved. If you’re looking for a whiskey-based alternative to The Walrus Club, Nant is for you(and me!)

I am a fan of Nant. I like the décor, the Whisky, just maybe not the parking after about 7pm. That being said I find this to be a nice spot to have a few drinks and love the fact that their cocktails are all made with their own Whisky which is unique and pretty cool, wish I had my own Whisky. This is not a late night spot for me but rather somewhere for pre drinks and enjoy the quality of the place and the cocktails. I reckon you should all pay a visit and taste their Sazerac, it is pretty good and very well made by a bartender with loads of experience. Pricing is always subjective, but at least Nant knows who they are trying to attract in a customer and reflect this in all areas of their Bar. Overall a welcoming and quite old world fancy experience.

Key lesson: Nant is a destination bar. Visit with purpose, a love of whisky(or curiosity) or a special occasion, not as a bar to pass time while you wait for an event to start. It’s a specialty bar and you may feel out of place ordering a G&T or champagne when an impressively lit bar of international and local whiskys are staring at you, willing you to order a nip. There’s nothing quite like this in Brisbane and it is Nant’s first bar in Australia(opening before they opened in their home state of Tas where the distillery is). It’s certainly the first bar in Brisbane where I’ve seen private lockers. After my initial shock at the prices($ 25 for a nip of Nant Whisky and cocktails priced anywhere from $ 18-$ 34) I settled on an espresso martini with«Nant Port Wood Whisky infused with coffee and a coffee liqueur». Was it a drink worth the price tag of $ 25? Well, in theory, yes. Look, it was interesting and I liked it. The Port Wood Whisky had depth and meaning — it had piqued my interest in Whisky. Would I pay it again? Probably not. And not because the product was in any way unsatisfactory, but when I think private lockers, exclusive whiskys and that level of luxury I think somewhere like Eau De Vie in Melbourne where you’re in a lap of luxury, with a brooding atmosphere and bar tenders that are masters of mixology. Yes, I’ll grant you that, Brisbane’s schtick is a lot more casual but for the prices being asked the service & atmosphere needs to take a few more bounds higher before I think they can earn my $ 34 for a cocktail.

Nice little bar hidden away in the back corner of Emporium. The atmosphere is a little old world. Staff are friendly and take the time to tell you the story behind the distillery the bar is named for. Top self whiskey, club lounge chairs and class without pretension. What more do you need to unwind after a busy day. Be prepared to pay for the quality though.
