Ok my expectations were low and decent was all I needed at the moment. So the food turned out pretty good actually. Not up to Singapore standards of course but perfectly edible and quite nice. Also the price was affordable. 4 persons rice, noodles, half a duck, veg and pork rib all for a little over a hundred. Recommended if you need a Chinese fix. But don’t expect spore standards and you won’t be disappointed.

So Christmas rolls around and my husband and I are literally walking around like a pack of hungry wolves trying to find a place, ANYPLACE, that was open and containing a kitchen. Enter Golden Palace. This restaurant is not much an ambiance, in fact it looked pretty tired and worn down. The food was subpar, and the service was pretty horrible. One odd thing was that the rice appeared on our table in a thermos-looking contraption, an upon opening the lid, we found it was one mass of gluey rice, not the fluffy steamed rice one expects from a Chinese Restaurant. Paying the 15% public holiday surcharge(don’t even get me started on that) was literally a slap in the face.

My partner and I had a nice dinner here Saturday night; we shared some soups, entrees and yum cha dishes which were all good; the steamed dim sims were a standout. Also had some chow mein and beef in black bean sauce which were also yummy. The wait staff were really good and service was terrific; we will be back!

As a kid, before my vego days, I used to love coming to Yum Cha here at the Golden Palace. I basically just ate spring rolls and rice and hung out for that wobbly, opaque coconut jelly you get at the end. Now that I’m vegetarian, Yum Cha isn’t really much of an option, but I returned to Golden Palace recently just for a regular dinner. I was excited to relive my childhood by eating some(what I remember as) delicious food and enjoying the bustling atmosphere and noise. The place looked smaller than I remember it, but I guess that’s normal. I don’t know if I was an undiscerning kid or if the food here has gone downhill, or if the Yum Cha is better than the normal meals, but unfortunately I was a bit let down by the food. There weren’t many vegetarian options even on the a la carte menu so I ordered steamed vegetables in garlic sauce, rice, and asked them to make me a vegetarian noodle dish. The food was okay, but I was expecting more than your average local Chinese takeaway standard from Golden Palace and that’s what I got. I think it’s definitely a Brisbane rite of passage to go for Yum Cha here, and the crazy, loud ambience is fun and you get a real sense of occasion. For me, though, the food isn’t the highlight of Golden Palace.

We had a great Yum Cha experience at the Golden Palace. My friends and family have tried about half a dozen places in the Valley and one at Sunnybank and we must’ve hit the Golden Palace on a good day, because everything was hot and delicious, from the dumplings to the greens, except for the mango pancakes, which were cool and creamy, as they shold be. The service was quick and the green tea plentiful. We tried to eat quite moderately so we wouldn’t rack up the bill too quickly(by only having two or three baskets or plates on the table at once) and we succeeded, being pleasantly surprised to walk away very satisfied and with a bill of just under $ 25 each. I’ll definitely go there again.

I’ve eaten at Golden Palace three times: twice for yum cha and once at my cousin’s wedding banquet. The service and food at the banquet/dinner time was better by all accounts. Firstly: the yum cha. My mum was visiting us one weekend and we took her to Golden Palace for some brunch. Because she grew up in Hong Kong, mum has some pretty high standards when it comes to yum cha and dumplings, and she wasn’t impressed at all. The service was quite slow; we waited some time for tea refills. When the carts came around they had a limited selection, and although the dumplings were tasty, they were slightly lukewarm. All up it was a pricey lunch for what it was, and we left feeling underwhelmed. The wedding banquet, on the other hand, was an entirely different story. I wasn’t expecting much, but just as you step into a cinema with no expectations for the crappy movie you’re about to see, I was pleasantly surprised. The food was fresh and delicious, and the staff outstanding in their service and efficiency. There were eight courses all up, and two dessert courses. But vegetarians beware: each of the main dishes contained meat. Any animal you can think of was probably devoured that night.
