HOTGOSSIP! I’ve just found out that Fourth Wall is going to be replaced by Pillar Bar.(I have submitted a new business on Unilocal so hopefully it will show up soon.) Pillar Bar will open on 29÷1÷2016 Lots of fans of Fourth Wall have been posting on Facebook that Pillar Bar has big shoes to fill, so fingers crossed the new cocktail bar will be just as awesome as Fourth Wall. They don’t seen to have a website yet, but they do have a Facebook page with the latest opening details on. Happy Cocktail Hour everyone!

After having dinner at the M & A complex on Ann St, we were walking back into the Valley when the adorable door man of The Fourth Wall literally opened the door and welcomed us in while we were walking past — we were taken aback and so impressed by his coaxing in that we immediately turned back and went inside. I had been craving a Sidecar and wasn’t able to get one from where we had dinner, so I asked the barman if he could make it. He said yes! Complete with a sugared rim, it was delightful! My bae asked for something fresh and inspired — I’m not sure what was in it, but it tasted like the tears of a thousand angels, it was absolutely delightful. We didn’t stay long because we had plans for the rest of the evening, but it was definitely worth dropping in. The décor was lovely, it was warm and inviting and the staff were all super lovely. Will definitely go back!

So it was a cruisy Friday afternoon, and my mate and I were looking for a place that we hadn’t yet experienced. Sorting through the various pubs, bars, and speakeasies, I came across Fourth Wall. I walked in around 5:30pm, expecting it to be pretty quiet, but it was already jostling. It didn’t take long to fill up with a crowd. Partly because it is a smaller venue, but mostly because two or three parties had already joined the fray. Upon approaching the bar, I was cheerfully greeted and asked about my day. Genuinely at that too, that’s a rare quality to come by. Unfortunately I didn’t catch his name, but he very artistically juggled myself, and many other patrons. Fourth Wall have a wide variety of beers, wines, and spirits populating the shelves, and fridge. Being a cocktail bar, I thought I’d order a Negroni – my favourite cocktail. Secondly I asked for a Sazerac, which arrived before I even got comfortable again. It was well-rounded, buttery, and sweet. For a first experience, this cocktail bar was wonderful! Both bartenders working that night did great job, and were professional and prompt. I very much look forward to returning again, you’ve made a promoter out of me. Keep up the awesome work Fourth Wall :)

The best place to drink in Brisbane, hands down. Only in movies and at fourth wall can your march up to the bar, sit down and politely ask the bartender to make you whatever you want. It will always be delicious. You’ve made the right decision.

Excellent, excellent, excellent. A very simple set up, they’ve obviously not spent all that much time or money on the fit out of the place — not that that’s necessarily a bad thing. It’s comfortable, and basically a nice place to spend time at. Where they absolutely excelled however was what they are there for — to serve you excellent drinks. The bar staff were super friendly, and weren’t stuck on the«usual cocktail recipes» — in fact very far from it. They ask you what you like, and offer suggestions and make cocktails up to suit your tastes. And if you don’t like what they’ve made, they are happy to keep trying until you find something that’s just perfect for you! Certainly not many places that offer this kind of customer service! Cocktails are a pretty reasonable price of $ 18 too!

This unassuming hole in the wall along Ann Street is a hidden gem — easily missed as you walk through the Valley, deafened by the nearby clubs with their loud music pounding till the pavements shake. But look out for the A-frame sitting just outside their door — the last I saw it(that was in early Jan 2014) it had«RUMDMC» written on it — and you know you’ve found the spot. Step inside to get away from the rowdiness that is the weekend in the Valley, and take a look at their brand new 2014 menu. Each drink is marked with a flavour profile to help you along with your choices. Still confused? Let the bartenders know what your usual posisons are, and get them to recommend one. Either way, I strongly recommend trying The Rosie. And Jimmy Collin’s Cup. I could drink them all day.

When owner Chris assured me that short, sharp answers to his questions were the route to ultimate drink satisfaction, I figured I’d play along. Having already shared a bottle of bubbles and a bottle of reisling with a friend earlier in the night — I literally had no idea what I felt like drinking. It was a bit like a game of Guess Who — we ruled out dark spirits, vodka and berries, but I was on the fence about whether sweet or sour would make my night. So he gave me both. I ended up with a gin-based Breakfast Martini. If I had have looked at the ingredients of this particular bevvy on a cocktail list, I probably would have skipped right over it. I’m not so much into marmalade and don’t love orange in cocktails. Yet somehow, it was the perfect tipple. Both sweet and sour and oh so easy to drink. While the drinks were perfect, I was a little unsure about the bar space. I recognise that it is brand spanking new(it even still smells of paint), but there was something not quite right about the space. Maybe it was the way you couldn’t quite get comfy on the benches along the wall(they were just a bit too high for regular height people), the almost too bright lighting or maybe the kind of awkward mashup of opulant cushions on recycled wood pallets. But really, the space is a minor detail in the scheme of things because the excellent service and quality drinks will keep me coming back to Fourth Wall.

Trust me to find a bartender in Brisbane who enjoys booze banter as much as I do. Oh yay! It’s the«let me guess your perfect drink» game. Way to win a girl over Brisbane! Fourth Wall had only been open a few days when I ventured here with a gin loving friend. I’d ordinarily be in the mood for a martini, but that night I was slightly off my game and my conversation with bartender and owner, Chris, took a little longer than normal as I didn’t know exactly what I was in the mood for. What resulted was a Bitter Summer, a delightfully sprightly mix of gin and magic served in a high ball with huge quantities of crushed ice. Ahhh, thirst quenching stuff and exactly what I needed. With some well thought out lounges and a huge mound of pillows, this is the kind of place I could happily spend a few hours on my weekends. Lucky you, Brisbane, you just scored yourself an awesome new bar to hang out in.

A decent chunk of my review for Kerbside bar was essentially a review of Chris Denman’s killer bartending skills, and with that in mind, I have some news for you. Those skills have been transferred to the brand spanking new Fourth Wall bar just around the corner, owned and run by the man himself and his partner in crime(and life), Stevie. Such good news for the Brisbane bar scene! Fourth Wall is one of the growing number of Brisbane’s small bars with a licence legally classified as «commercial other». This means only sixty patrons can be inside at any one time, and it also means that the bar closes at midnight. I can live with that, because I’m getting old and grumpy and having to go home to bed not long after midnight is okay with me most nights. But enough about me, let’s talk about this adorable little corner of the Valley. Adorned with flickering tea lights(they’re even INSIDETHEACTUALBAR), cushions cushions CUSHIONS, rearrangeable bench seats made from wooden pallets with comfy upholstered tops, and beautiful wall art, Fourth Wall is set to be one of those safe spaces in the Valley for those of us who aren’t really fans of the dudebro culture. I can’t tell you what beer’s in the fridge, or even what spirits are on the shelves — which is odd, because usually that’s the first thing I’ll take inventory of when checking out a bar for the first time. But the fact is that I am pretty confident that whatever Chris has behind the bar will end up turning into something I’ll like. There was no cocktail list that I could see, but again — I wasn’t looking. Why bother browsing a list when you could play the questions game with Chris? The first question is always«what’s your favourite spirit?», it goes on from there, and the end result is always delicious. I don’t even have to play the questions game any more because Chris knows what I like, and if that isn’t supreme customer service then I don’t know what is. Enough cocktail nerd fangirling, geez. Just get down to Fourth Wall and check it out for yourself. Let me know when you’re going, because there are only so many times I can go by myself and cuddle a cushion while I drink solo before it gets kinda weird.
