Took me a while to remember the name. The owners of(??? oh yeah) Selam Authentic previously ran Awash, the über-rad Ethiopian near Franco Cozzos we all enjoyed before St Jeromes Laneways Festivals of days gone by. Over here in the mean end of Nicholson St(which is kind-a in the middle) the menu is the same, TV is bigger and the ambience less intimate, yet still draws us back time after time. If you’re after hanging out with the boys, there’s a pool table way, way, way out the back(so far it almost hits the train station). I recommend these three dishes. Yetsom Beyonetu — which is the vegetable combination, Derek Tibs — just like a lamb roast with green chillies and –only if there are three of you — Gored Gored. Gored Gored sounds like it came from the cave of the Minotaur with you wearing a bib made from a sacrificial goat, yet it’s a marinated beef that’s sooooo juicy and buttery that it can’t be good for your health(either is heading out to the pool room I’d reckon). So go and check out Amy’s and her daughters’ wicked hairstyle of the day and step up to Selam.
