Well this Ethiopian restaurant and bar was a nice little surprise. I’ll start by mentioning that it has featured on a few television programs, won a couple of awards over the years, a very dedicated customer had his reception here, not to mention it has come recommended by MasterChef’s Matt Preston. The Harambe family are very proud of their Ethiopian heritage and are delighted to share their traditions with their fellow customers. The restaurant and bar itself is designed for you to immerse yourself in Ethiopian culture from the upstairs decorated dining area to eating with your hands. Mark ‘The Terrifying Sharptooth’ and I went on a Friday night, which happened to be an all-you-can-eat $ 20 buffet night, and I have to admit that we were very, VERY impressed with the food. Now if you’re wondering what an Ethiopian menu consists of think — ingera(similar to a gigantic pancake), herbs, spices, lentils, beans, cabbage, curries, minced stews, meat stews, rice and of course there is a selection of Ethiopian beers to wash it all down with. The dining is very relaxed, almost so relaxed that it feels like you’ve been invited as a guest into their home. The staff were undoubtedly friendly and helpful, and the food really is something to talk about. Harambe also holds cooking classes, provides take away and delivery, and caters for festivals and functions. For a change of scenery, this is definitely a place worth mentioning to your friends. Tip: No Eftpos or credit card facilities.

Harambe has possibly the best décor of any Ethiopian restaurant. Fitted out like a hut and top to tails with wood and weave, this place is where you go with a group. It is so good that my wife and I were lucky enough to have our wedding reception there. With so many options in Footscray, this one is the special one. Vegetarians rejoice, a place you can go with your carnivore com padres. Weekends have a smörgåsbord option although we prefer the meat and vegetable combination dishes as they’re different. Dershaye and his family are the best hosts so make sure to introduce yourself. They’ll remember you next time.
