There’s something about having a greasy kebab after a big night out that just ticks all the boxes. Kebab Factory is a venue that s open to the wee hours of the morning and accommodates to thus of us who have been out all night drinking. During the day the venue is dead quiet. like seriously I’m not sure why they stay open! At night the venue is filled up with booze hounds dying for a feed, the kebabs here are pretty lack lustre. They hit the spot but make my stomach curdle a little.

The city of Melbourne is rare in the fact that there are more Greek Souvlaki’s on offer rather than Turkish Kebabs. This lack of kebab has definitely left me with a hankering for the good ol’ doner meat fest. And the Kebab Factory is up there with the best. The Kebab Factory is clean which is a big plus for a place that sells spit roasted meat. They serve their kebabs in pide bread, which works in perfect symphony with their delicious garlic and chilli sauce. I also like the fact that you can buy half(or junior) kebabs for about $ 6 — not for the reason I ever go for the half kebab mind you, but for the reason that buying the ‘jumbo’ kebab just makes me feel like I am getting value for money. So if you are on Brunswick Street having had a few drinks then skip the usual Souvlaki and go the kebab. The meat may be of poorer quality, but damn it is tasty.

First ever kebab I had in Melbourne. God, that’s a long time ago. They’re good kebabs, though. Not the best in Melbourne, but good. Turkish bread, which I always prefer, chilli paste, garlic sauce. It’s also a great place for a drunken baklava.

File under the worst — and probably most memorable — date I’ve ever taken my boyfriend on: Where: The Kebab Factory, Brunswick Street When: after waaaay too much booze at one of Fiztroy’s watering holes Why: ravenous hunger What: a kebab underneath The Kebab Factory’s television screen. It was showing the Victoria’s Secret runway show which only added to the romance… Ok, in retrospect it wasn’t such a grand date for him — leggy models notwithstanding — but if you like kebabs you can’t go too far wrong with Brunswick Street’s Kebab Factory. This place is so fortuitously located to catch drunk kebab-hungry people emerging from Fitzroy’s bars that once you sober up a little you almost feel as if you’ve been bamboozled. Selling a range of kebabs and what I’m told is a pretty good selection of vegetarian options, The Kebab Factory is a Fitzroy institution. I usually opt for one of The Kebab Factory’s chicken kebabs which are very satisfying indeed. Perhaps not the best place for a date — romance wise The Kebab Factory is left a little wanting — but a fine kebab purveyor nonetheless.

There are many unexplained phenomena in this world in which we live. The pyramids… the statues on Easter Island… and «Why is it that when I’m drunk I want a souvlaki?» While we’ll never really know the answer, I can tell you how to manage this craving… Head to The Kebab Factory on Brunswick St in Fitzroy on your next night out. Situated in the prime location that is the middle of Brunswick Streets’ many, many bars, this place will meet your drunken cravings every time you visit. Serving traditional Lamb, Beef and Vegetarian souvlaki and kebabs in a Turkish bread roll or a wrap, you can also grab a range of other tasty pastries including a variety of Boreks, which are the Middle Eastern version of a pastie.(Filo pastry filled with either curry, mixed lamb or spinach and cheese). On the other side of the servery you’ll also find a range of traditional deserts, such as baklava. You’ll be looking at spending about ten dollars to fill your tank, and if you’re still hungry, the attached shop next door sells good old-fashioned western goods such as pizza and fish and chips. Open all night!

You’re out late on Brunswick St and you need to stuff your face pronto but you’re not so drunk that you’re willing to make do with a limp slice of $ 1.50 pizza or brave one of the many other dubious late-night food spots on the strip. Go to The Kebab Factory. Here you can get fresh and filling Turkish kebabs that won’t repeat on you in the morning(well, depending how many you eat) as well as a range of boreks, wraps, felafel and other good post-drinking fare. Plus they have ample seating, unlike some of the other kebab joints. If it’s not late at night, this is also where I go for dips to take to BBQs — their hummus is creamy and rich and it looks much more impressive than buying a brand container from Coles.
