Yep three for me– it’s good traditional deli food but at fine dining prices– the $ 15 tuna sushi is what I would find out of a hole in the wall in the city for $ 4– to much rice and little filling. I expect more than just some nice décor when you’re paying good money

I really liked this place, and don’t get all the three star reviews. It’s an understated Jap restaurant, sure, but it’s very cozy and candlelit, with great service and excellent food. Exactly what you expect from this type of place in Fitzroy but a little better. We had a great time here ordering beers and sushi and gyoza. It’s not fine dining, but it’s cool, cozy, and understated, with great food/drinks. Good prices too. Reminded me a lot of how sushi bars actually were from my visit to Japan; will definitely return.

I feel this place just gets 3 stars because it’s no frills and not a fancy sushi spot. I’m giving it a 4 because this is what you get on Smith Street, it’s not fancy, most places are like street cafes as opposed to fine dining but this is reasonably priced, the food is simple but fresh and excellently prepared, and service is just right… The toilet is a tad 3rd world but hey, no worries!

Not bad, a good number of vegetarian options(my partner is vego) and some good sharing options. The tempura I had was a little soggy which put a bit of a downer on the meal but the agedashi tofu was perfect.

This is a cute Japanese resto, and much like stated before, great for those of us on training wheels. The sushi isn’t all sashimi. The starters and entrees, almost like Japanese ‘tapas’ are so great for grabbing a large variety and sharing with a group. I think I most like the upstairs room. It makes Peko Peko a great place for a party. Loads of sharing plates, and then this private little den upstairs for you to settle in for a nice slow dinner of taste-testing their different choices.

Peko Peko is a quintessentially cheap and cheerful Japanese café. It’s got all the standard katsus, udons, dons and alike for little mulla, but without much authenticity. I tend to head to Peko when I’m dining with timid eaters, because if I’m honest, everything has a slightly homogenized salty taste. Don’t get me wrong, I looooove salt and I’ll happily scoff down a meal at Peko, but good Japanese food should be a little more complex than this. But, if you don’t have a lot of time or money then it’s a pretty good option. Overall Peko Peko is a fun little crowd-pleaser(with heaps of vegetarian options), and those of us with higher expectations of Japanese food will forget all about them after a bottle of wine anyway.
