$ 8.80 for a hefty sized char kuai teow, generous on the BBQ pork and they also smiled when I asked for no shrimp and extra vege instead and make it spicy? That is rare. If I had discovered this place earlier I probably would have eaten here once a week on my school lunch break. From the outside it looked dingy and crappy … But there was another asian couple sitting inside enjoying their food which to me. Always a good sign. I watched the lady make sushi and at $ 2.30 a roll and she was pretty generous with all the filling it looked much better than a place i tried last week on Brunswick St. I’ll be back here again!

I have a theory about eateries that do more than two or more types of cuisine — that they don’t do any of them well. Because if they did one well, that’s all they’d need to do to get the punters in the door. Unfortunately, Ming’s is in support of my theory. This noodle cum sushi joint does dishes from across the Asian continent, but they’re all on the ordinary side, with noodles often drowning in ultra-salty sauces. Still, sometimes salt is what you need, so I’m not saying I don’t pop in for some stir fried goodness after a big night. I’m yet to try the sushi, however, I have it on good authority from a friend that the teriyaki(had to google how to spell that — embarrassing) chicken in the hand rolls is chewy and a little suspect in colour…

I’ve caught myself a few times now, not wanting to cook on the way home and popping in to let Ming’s do the cooking for me. The simple Asian style food isn’t the most flavoursome you’ll eat but it does the job and fills the void. There is a selection of fried rice or noodles with classic fillings of beef, pork, chicken, shrimp of vege and accompanied with a standard choice of sauces. The simple Chinese hospitality is generally given with a smile and the last time I chose chopsticks over a fork I got a bigger smile along with«good boy». Everything here is cheap and you get a belly full with leftovers for under $ 10. If you choose to eat in, be prepared to sit at very cramped tables, and listen to what sounds like a bickering old couple.
