I’ve been a regular at Red Olive for 6 years. It’s changed hands recently and lost some of it’s soul. Prices have gone up and unfortunately service has gone down a peg. Called in a pizza last night, showed up to collect it and they’d given it to someone else. No big deal, stuff goes wrong at times, but leaving me hanging around and not telling me what had happened until I pressed them wasn’t great. Barely a sorry once it had been made again.

Located in Fitzroy North, Red Olive serves classic and simple Italian dishes. A very family friendly place, it definitely offers a very cosy environment. With a wood-fire oven at the centre of the restaurant, the focus is clearly on the pizza. Using seasonal ingredients, the dishes reflect the produce that is available to the restaurant. Entrees range from $ 6 to $ 13 and include calamari, meatballs, and beef carpaccio. Mains range from $ 15 to $ 29 and include pizzas, pastas, and meat. We ordered a few pizzas and pastas to share amongst a group of 6 — my favourite was the St Georges(pork sausages, salame, peppers, onion, mushroom, and chilli) and the lasagna. A great lasagna is hard to find and Red Olive does make a great lasagna. With friendly staff and prompt service, it’s a great option in Fitzroy North.

I, like many locals, tend to underestimate the Red Olive a little. Every time I have been have enjoyed delicious Italian food, great drinks and friendly and fast service. However I never recommend it. In fact I never actively go there, its just a place I’m led too. Don’t get me wrong. It is an excellent place… it just doesn’t stand out. Antipasto starts off the menu but for me the pizza’s are the stars of the show. Wood fire and authentically thin and crispy topped with fresh ingredients. There is something for everyone, the classics as well as new combinations. My favourite is the mediterranea($ 19) which is the delicious combination of roast lamb, peppers, onion, feta, cherry tomato and yogurt. Yum. Great pasta and risotto dishes sway in the chorus but are definitely worthy of your attention. The salads are fresh and tasty too. they have a well stocked bar and can suggest something to suite your meal. Great Italian food. I just wish I could remember to come here!

Thinking about my experience at Red Olive, there really isn’t anything I can fault them on. They offer the same style thin based wood fired pizzas that I would rate at a similar level to those at Ladro, Casa Farro, DOC and +39. It’s really hard to separate all of these places. DOC perhaps has the best pizza, closely followed by Casa Farro, closely followed by Red Olive, closely followed by Ladro. One particular item on the Red Olive menu is mind blowing though — their nduja(spicy calabrian salame specialty). They have this spicy delicious sausage on one of their pizzas and in one of their pastas. You definitely need to experience this. I’d also recommend the St George’s pizza with pork sausage, salame, peppers, onion, mushroom, chilli. If you find yourself at Deco bar next door, you can often order off Red Olive’s menu because they have a special relationship. That means boutique beers and delicious pizzas.
