People who know me well know I have an Art Deco fetish. Therefore, a wine bar filled with Art Deco furniture and props is utopia for me. This cute little wine bar is a cozy place to grab a few drinks and chill out. I suspect mainly locals hang out here, so the vibe is laid back and the beard ratio is high. Nice little place to end the night with a few drinks and discuss existentialism with intellectual locals.

A charming little Venue and one that I actually did«stumble across» I haven’t been here for a while, as last time was during the Northcote High street festival. Deco has a great little courtyard out the back, which is charming, and rather chilled-out. As is a common way for things with me, I was inconsistent in beverage choice, jumping from one thing to another. Chiefly, exploring a great range of dark beers; including the«Hitachino» Nest beers. These are magnificent Japanese craft brews of superior skill. More so to my changing order, the bar tender went above and beyond the call not only to make us feel welcomed, but to predict, serve and bring out the next drink to me. I left the choices to him, and wasn’t disappointed. I also remember ploughing into a pizza and thoroughly enjoying it. Live music is often seen, and on Sundays from five pm, you’ll usually get a performance of some kind. Usually somewhere in the regions of Acoustic singers or jazz. The time I was here, there was a cat that seemed to be playing a magical game of hide and seek amongst the vines on the back wall. It was like something out of Alice and wonderland: a cat leapt into a wall, landed on a little perch and the then continued to climb in the vines– up a little passage way until it was over the wall anddisappeared. The games cats play! Oh and this bar has good food too. A cool, casual, intimate, no fuss, and chilled out little spot just off St Georges Road.

Look better in the dark? Well Deco is the perfect place to bring a prospective partner for a bit of wining and(limited) dining supplied by the neighbouring food stores. The mood lighting in here is so dark you could process film while enjoying a good vino(younger punters probably won’t know what processing film is — I can hear them now ‘does he mean upload?’) The cheese platter was really tasty and of course goes well with wine, I don’t know about wine and pizza mixing — maybe that’s what girls do on one of those ‘girls night in’ things — but for me pizza should be eaten with a beer, which is lucky because Deco also have a really extensive beer, cider and spirits menu. Try the Leffe, it’s a light-coloured and strong Belgian beer, absolutely sensational. For the tight-arses there’s a few good selections of cheaper wine available by the glass and bottle. The Margaret River SBS is a winner. Great place, comfy chairs, affordable, brilliant atmosphere that makes you feel a lot drunker than you are(hence a cheaper night).

Deco Wine Bar is a great place to go for a bottle of wine with friends. It’s as simple as that. With a wine by the glass list that put many bars to shame, it offers a variety of old and new world wines within a reasonable price. From a perfumed Alsatian Gewürztraminer($ 12) to a floral and lemon Sardinian Vermentino($ 8), you get whites from all over the world. This goes for reds as well — you can find a Spanish Garnacha($ 9.5) and Australian Shiraz($ 8). A perfect complement to the wine is the actual venue itself — dark lighting with big comfortable chairs that make you want to throw back a few bottles of wine and relax. If you’re feeling hungry, they have a great cheese platter($ 8 per cheese or $ 20 for a three-cheese plater) or order from the pizza menu, which is made by its neighbour, Red Olive. A very sophisticated bar, it is perfect for the grownups. In the summer, move from the comfortable couches inside to the picnic tables out back.

Deco is one of the coolest looking wine bars in the north side of the city. Located on St George’s road next to Red Olive restaurant, Deco has an extensive selection of beers and wines and excellent service from Steve and sometimes Abby. The décor is dark and sophisticated and the ambience and vibe very chilled. In summer the back beer garden is a great spot to hang out in. The clientele are usually very talkative and Deco is a good spot to meet a number of interesting people. You can also get a feed here with a number of small share plates on offer and you can even order in the wood-fired pizzas from Red Olive next door. On Sunday evenings there is usually live music on and good relaxing times to be had.
