I have eaten a *lot* of duck in my time. Every single way possible. And I have never had duck better than this. I am literally writing this covered in the juices and oil of this beautiful majestic bbq’d creature and I am without words. I can’t even vocalise my love. All I can do is make inhuman noises. Oh my lord.

Chinese two nights in a row? Well this time it wasn’t my choice. Catching up with friends, and Chinese was on the menu. This was actually our third choice spot, but being a Monday night the other two places were closed. Quite possibly the best Chinese i’ve had. Between 5 of us we got crispy duck rolls, dim sims, lemon chicken, mongolian beef, honey BBQ pork and a large fried rice. Easily the best fried rice i’ve had. The pork and beef were sensational, and I normally only get honey or lemon chicken, and this chicken, you could really taste it, not overpowered by the batter. Best of all, it worked out to be about $ 15 a person. Sweet. It’s also BYO, and I don’t believe they charged corkage. The décor is kind of what you expect from a small Chinese joint in suburban Brisbane, and it’s quite small, although they DO have two large, round tables with a rotating server in the middle, which became more and more entertaining as more and more drinks were consumed. The aircon was leaking onto the floor, soaking into the carpet, giving that lovely run down ambience. Is there better Chinese in Brisbane? Very well may be. It’s something I’d go for maybe once or twice a year. I just know it’s a level above most places.

I am a big fan of this place. Inexpensive, authentic Asian food in a somewhat daggy restaurant — can ‘t wait to go back!

Since we were at Yum Yum for one thing and one thing only — we ordered the two-course duck, which included the Peking duck and the duck with lettuce wrap. Other choices are available, but I didn’t feel like soup or anything. The Peking duck(49) was not bad, though they didn’t do a good job of cleaning the fat off the skin(which proper Peking duck is supposed to have), and the duck wasn’t all that flavorful — maybe cause the sauce and green onions didn’t taste right. The dish is really made for about 10 people as part of a family-style dinner, so I possibly just had a bit too much of the same flavor, but I thought the Peking duck was just mediocre. I’ve had much better lettuce wraps before, and don’t think I’ll be returning to Yum Yum, even though it may be the best for Peking duck in Brissy. It didn’t live up to my expectations, and just got me craving for Great China’s peking duck. Theirs is good enough that I’ll put up with their unfriendly and inattentive service just to get some of their duck(and crab and buns)! Ah, I miss good Chinese food…

This is one of those little suburban gems that I love finding out about. While Peking duck is undoubtedly their signature dish, they do have a variety of Chinese dishes on their menu. I’m not a Peking duck expert — I like the skin glazed and crispy, the flesh juicy and the pancakes warm with that freshly made taste. Yum Yum Peking Duck certainly fulfils all of those categories. In fact, it’s comparable to some of the fancy Peking Duck venues I’ve eaten at in Hong Kong. The servings are also generous. We ordered two ducks between six girls with the three course option(pancakes, stir fried duck /san chow bow and soup) but we could have easily gone with the two course option(no soup) The venue is pretty small so make sure you book ahead to avoid disappointment.

This will always be the place I spotted a celebrity in Centenary. Who else did I sit behind but Bernard Fanning from Powderfinger. The little restaurant is a bit tiny inside, and echoey as I found out, so we did spend most of the time not focussing on our food, but on the conversation on the next table. Hey, it’s not like we interruped him, we were the only other people in there! The next time we did focus on the food, and while the peking duck this restaurant boasts is pretty yummy(3.5÷5 i’m a bit of a peking duck nazi) there are other dishes which compliment that style as well. Plus, you can come in and buy some BBQ meats hanging in the front display window for take away, you just tell them how much, they chop it up and off you go. The dry beef ho fan is quite delicious and packed full of flavour, and I really did love their roast pork and tofu hot pot. Both are tasty and leave you wanting more. I know that a lot of places have given this place raving reviews, evidence of the newspaper and magazine articles are cut out and sticky taped to the front door. I know that people like Bernie from Powderfinger even go there. But i’ve been to my fair share of chinese tucker places, and while this place has been highly rated, I can’t say it’s made my top 5. Go there for the duck and a few select dishes, you won’t be disappointed. But make no mistake… this place is famous for it’s duck… not it’s dishes.
