A couple of the reasons I sort like The Columbian Hotel is that the crowd that gathers, predominately if not all gay male, happen to be of a mixed bag when it comes to ages and stereotypes. There are a few ravers, dancer types as well as those just out for a casual good night on the town. I note that others have complained of druggies or drug dealers but I didn’t see any, but then again maybe I didn’t because that wasn’t what I was look for. As for drinks, I had a few rum and cokes, and found them to of a better more decent pour than most of the other nearby Oxford Street gay bars. On weekends they have some go-go boy type dancers but what they had were really in dire need of some good dancing lessons. Their dance steps were more akin to that of some sod buster following a tractor through the fields than those of professional dance moves.

I recently visited the Colombian Hotel for the first time, and it just happened to be their 11’th birthday! They had a fairly big turnout for the party and offered a free beer or wine and snacks to all attending guests. The party also featured David Aeon pole dancing, DJ’s Chip & Magnus in the main bar and DJ’s Robert Herbert & Calvin Wong in the lounge bar. There was also a magician performing parlor tricks and making balloon animals all evening. This place has a great atmosphere.

Really friendly bar staff here — always happy to mix you up what you feel like and have a laugh with you. I enjoy coming here for dancing. The music is always good and the mix of people are always friendly and great to have a dance with.

This is a regular pub with a host of reasons for why you should check it out. There is a fantastic menu, a great outdoor area, pool tables, a cool and clean atmosphere. Fantastic on Sunday afternoons. I think the Colombian attracts a very generic crowd where the people are after fun, not necessarily part of any scene but mainly just wanting to get out and enjoy the night life. It’s good for passers-by travellers and even an older crowd over 35. The vibe is not too manic, the music is not too loud and the dancing happens upstairs. But overall it has some great good and the drinks pour non-stop. Great for groups even family occasions.

The Columbian is one of the stayers, and offers an entry level bar and upstairs dance floor/cocktail bar. It’s a gay bar which is straight friendly, as they all should be but are sometimes not. It can get a bit seedy, with people zonking out in the corner and sticky drinks spilt on the tables/floor but that is part of the experience. Upstairs is party central, where you can bust out those special moves on the dance floor. This place is much more relaxed than some of the other gay bars on the strip, and offers an incredible people watching vantage point from the front windows — or are the people watching you? The place to see and be seen, it seems! An iconic venue, which isn’t going anywhere soon. Go there!

I’m totally a fan of The Columbian Hotel, it was a place that wasn’t too flash like Arq but not as glamourous as Stonewall. This gay venue is all about having fun and not wanting to waste time being or being around pretentious individuals. The crowd is mixed with young and old, gay and straight(Nearly every person i met one night was straight but there with gay friends). As Hannah J. says in her review i was definitely offered illegal substances here but apparently that’s just part of the Columbian experience. A lot of people are dancing and maybe having too-much of a good time but if you drink enough you can block them out of your experience. The columbian has a large bar in the front main entrance with a small dance space and a larger upstairs dance /bar area that i loved, it played a kind of jazz dance fusion beat that i haven’t really heard before. The Columbian is great, just make sure you plan on drinking a lot or you’ve had a lot to drink!

The Columbian Hotel should be reserved for when all your favourite clubs are closing, and you’re not quite done yet. It’s not very fancy, or very sophisticated, or overly lively, but it is a nice place to grab a beer and have a chat. If you can dodge the drug-peddlers offering to sell you a gram of coke for $ 300, that is. Don’t be surprised though, because Oxford street, everyone knows, is crawling with drug peddlers. It’s no big thing. Just keep your wits about you, and you’ll be fine. My favourite part about Columbian Hotel? They let you smoke in the pokies room! Or at least they used to, when I last visited some months ago… I hope they still do. Have a look and let me know?

There is never a dull moment at the Colombian. Day or night, faithful patrons occupy this local watering hole to thirst-quench, socialize(read: troll), or boogie. The large front windows lined with counter tops and stools make for some optimal Surry Hills people watching. And man are there people to watch there on the corner of Crown and Oxford. On a weekend night, the energy is fun, flirty and upbeat. Grab a cosmo shooter and head upstairs to dance alongside the best of ‘em. Don’t be deterred, the Colombian gets pigeonholed as a strictly gay bar, but that’s not necessarily the case. It’s definitely an everyone-welcome establishment with a helluva lot of spirit to offer. If you’re feeling like making a «night» out of your night, skip on over to the Colombian asap. If you’re a go-gettin’ party animal, you won’t be sorry.

This bar is always very diverse, a real mixed bag of people. If your headed to the Colombian then prepare yourself for a long and very fun night. I prefer the upstairs bar, its got a much better vibe than downstairs. The music really depends on what night you go(sometimes its good, however times just average). The drinks are all moderately priced. It can get very busy here at times.
