Sometimes the food here is good and of generous servings, other times it’s dry, tasteless and of meagre proportions. Tonight’s was an example of the latter. It’s always quite expensive for what it is, but the inconsistency is what’s so frustrating. This will be the last time we order from here. UPDATE11÷3÷15: Zeytoon has long closed; it’s now Mama’s Buoi.

This is the kind of place you might find yourself raving about at 1am to your mate who, unbeknownst to you, has passed out on the table in front of you, face down is his Mixed Shish after a 12 hour session at the Crowie. Fortunately the 18 tequila shots you had before you followed the enticing smell of chargilling flesh into Zeytoon, will sterilize your gut, protecting you from three days praying to the porcelain idol. If I was from Tassie I’d give Zeytoon 4 thumbs down. I’m running a book on whether a lack of customers or the health department shut these middle eastern cowboys down first. One star for being really nice blokes.

Not all kebab shops are created equal. (Well, sure, they might be when you’re utterly wankered and can’t distinguish a tree from a tyre iron, but that rule then applies to any type of business, not just kebab shops. And that’s why booze is the great leveller isn’t it?) This guys manning the counter are the friendliest chaps in Crows Nest. They’re all smiles, and go about their business with a calm and relaxing surety that makes me wanna hang out in there and chat instead of ripping my kebab in the gutter like a hungry homeless man like I normally do. I mentioned that this place is open late and I’m normally bladdered, right? Final word: any kebab ordered without both chilli and garlic sauce is a crime against king, country and humanity and punishable by court martial. No exceptions.

Open late night when you come home Pissed from the bars or you and your boyfriend have managed to miss every decent restaurant in Crows Nest before closing time. I’ve been here twice and I liked it much better the second time. I think the secret is making sure you order the right kind of sauce with your kebab. Last time I got BBQ and Garlic on my Falafel and wasn’t a huge fan. This time I got hummus and enjoyed it much more! Casual dinning and sitting areas inside and out. Great for a quick bite or to go.
