Roy’s is a bit of a sad affair. The café is laid out in such a haphazard way that it looks as though it is permanently in the process of moving locations, and it makes you think that surely this can’t be what was intended. It’s packed full of equipment, bay-marees, display cases and coolers, filled with every possible savoury pastry you could think of, which is a worry considering how few patrons seem to eat there. It’s run by a somewhat odd, but likeable German couple(the wife is super friendly and attentive and the husband is gruff and terse in a strangely charming European way). The food is cheap, and not particularly fresh, but they significantly rounded down the price of our order, which was very sweet. The place is just screaming for a Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares-style shake-up though. It must be fairly expensive rent in that location, so it seems like such a shame for a business to flounder so badly when there’s so much potential in terms of clientele there(so close to Melbourne Uni). In any case, if you’re looking for a cheap snack and you’re in the area, Roy’s is a step up from 7-Eleven.
