While it may not look like much from the street — in fact it simply looks like one of those hole in the wall coffee stop — when you step inside you discover that it is more than that, especially when you head down the alley to the garden out the back. That garden is nothing short of awesome and is a great place to sit down and have a spot of breakfast. I discovered this place simply because my hotel was across the road, and as I would walk past, especially in the morning, I would say to myself that I should go and check it out — and one morning I did and I must say that I was really, really glad. They have a pretty decent selection of offerings, as well as a number of specials, and they are quite problem in their delivery. They also do a decent pot of tea, however if there is one thing that makes this place stand out, and that is the garden.

Excellent little spot in the middle of the city. Very unassuming from the outside, even dingy looking, it has a little oasis hiding behind it. A small garden terrace, an oasis of calm. Just walk down the alleyway besides the café. Excellent food, good coffee, friendly service and great price.

If you find yourself up the Ann and George Streets end of the city head down the garden path off George for a quick timeout. The upstairs sitting area at Java Coast is your grandma’s living room with well-worn couches and soft lamp lighting. But it’s the back courtyard garden nestled between the buildings that makes Java Coast so nice.

Congratulations! You didn’t fail a perfectionist. This place is beyond recommended. Where can I start?! From the greeting to the last drop of my coffee I enjoyed my time here. Good coffee, good food, good service. Maybe cleaner than those fancy restaurants on the river walk! This is a business when you put your heart and soul in. The details are artistically executed, great to Instagram every corner. I liked how laid back this place is, especially if you have a train running in your head. It’s quite and cosy. Did I say the coffee and food are absolutely perfection? If you passed it make sure to go in, it is worth the experience.

We actually started going there for work meetings, just to escape the office for a little bit. Such a nice place. They have some space inside the coffee shop, but my favourite is the garden in the back! Loads of tables, awesome graffiti on the walls, and trees around you. Suddenly you don’t feel like you’re in the centre of the city anymore! Coffee is really tasty, waiters are polite and even if there is 7 of us, we never wait long for our coffees. We’ve never had problems with finding a table, there is always somewhere we can have our chat, and it’s just a pleasure to go there!

I returned to Java Coast for coffee, as they serve MAP, an Italian roaster. Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by the aromatic coffee that wasn’t bitter or too dark for my taste. My skinny latte was smooth and easy to drink — exactly the way I like my coffee. If my latte is anything like their usual — I am a fan! As for their food — I havn’t tried their sandwiches or pastries, but their hot foods aren’t as good as their coffee. They have coffee and pastry/food specials for takeaway, so if you’re looking for something quick in the city, this is the place to go!

This is the place i go to get away from the city, in the city. Having the hustle and bustle all around you 5 days a week, this is the place i go at lunch with a few friends and it feels like we are not in the city. Surrounded by trees and suburban art, its a great getaway even for a 30 minute break. I am a sucker for the haloumi burger and the banana breeze smoothie. Their coffee is consistently good as well. Some of the items are a bit pricey — you can easily spend over $ 20 for lunch, including drinks, but i am willing to pay it for the serenity of the environment.

For many years I walked past this place not giving it the time of day. It’s now my regular Thursday morning breakfast spot where I catch up with a small group of fellow caffeine addicts. Having only ever been here for breakfast, I can’t give feedback on lunches but there are two great things I can share about the morning service: 1. Coffee is consistently good and they have iced lattes on the menu. I suspect the consistency is a result of the very low turnover in staff. 2. Their Hollandaise is one of the best I’ve ever had and if you’re prepared for a highly calorific meal eggs bene is my recommended option. Or the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon & rye. The breakfast menu covers a good range of sweet and savoury options plus they have no qualms about swapping items for fussy eaters and people with specific dietary needs.

The Java Coast Café is my go-to place when out-of-towners call in for a coffee. This little café looks like it could be just a hole-in-the-wall style city servery, but looks can be deceiving. Offering a basic menu of café style sandwiches and hot dishes, the food is good, but not amazing, so while you can grab and go at Java Coast, you are really doing yourself a disservice if you don’t take the time to dine in. The moment you emerge from the bricked alleyway into garden out the back you will understand what I mean. I can’t think of anywhere else in the Brisbane CBD that provides such a tranquil dining option for escaping the monotonous city rhythm. Rickety outdoor tables and chairs perched on uneven ground are your vantage point for the garden in the middle of the city. Bordered by the brick façade of the old Tribal Theatre and the hodge-podge back verandahs of the café, this space has its own special flavour. So next time you are wandering down George St and have a half hour to spare, spend it soaking up some serenity at Java Coast.

Java Coast Café has to be one of the most inviting cafes in the CBD. Cocooned between the Grosvenor Hotel and Tribal Theatre, all you will see is an urban alley way that has been turned into a verdant jungle lane and peppered with a few tables and chairs. I always marvel at how much a few plants and trees can transform a place and this is a perfect example. George street’s four lane madness is merely a metre or two from the entrance to Java Coast Café and yet as soon as you enter you feel like you’re in someone’s garden. I’ve never sampled any of their food, but often use Java Coast Café as a place to meet friends for a coffee or juice before a movie next door at Tribal. The service is warm and personal, and the small, secluded environment with its limited seating gives the place an especially serene atmosphere. The coffee isn’t amazing, but definitely does the job. I often order a juice here just to add to the nature vibe. Java Coast Café has been tucked into its little alley for years and years now, and is still something of an undiscovered gem.

The first thing that strikes you about this place is its leafy jungle meets urban alleyway vibe. Given that, you could easily mistake it for a tourist trap that is all style no substance, but that would be dead wrong. Java Coast does among some of the best coffee in the city. It’s robust, complex and they really know how to get the milk right consistently. I know this because for a stretch of a few weeks when work took me to the city day-in-day-out I went here again and again for my coffee hit. I’ve stopped in for lunchtime sandwich a couple of times too and have been impressed with the size and quality of the food. Give it a go — it really is more than just a pretty face.

If I have time to kill in the city and wish to escape the loud and hecticness, I like to come to Java Coast Café. This place is all about the ambiance and location as the café menu options is nothing out of the ordinary. What I love about Java Coast is that once you are seated at your table down the leafy path, you completely forget that you are in the city! I use to come here back in the days when I would visit the city more often and would constantly be surprised at how unknown this place was. Most of the time I would bring friends here, they had never herd of it. This is shame but then again it could be seen as a good thing as that is what keeps the place quiet. Once you walk down the pathway, you will find yourself in a garden with lots of shady trees and little Buddha statues as decoration giving this place a very zen atmosphere. I honestly could spend a lot of time at the café, I could imagine it would be the perfect café to sit down and read a book whilst sipping on your coffee. I honestly can not remember what the coffee was like here as that I never came here for the coffee, but for the atmosphere. Java Coast Café is one of those relatively unknown treasures(although I have speculations it is getting more popular). If you need to hide from all the noise and hussel-bussel of the city, considering coming here for some time off.

I recently met a girlfriend in the city for a lunch date over which we were to solve all of her romantic problems, eat, have a coffee and catch up all within the time frame of one hour. Having fallen a little out of touch with the CBD I asked her to choose the venue of this very important meeting. She said to meet at Java Coast Café. I had never been before, and was so surprised that Brisbane had managed to hide this little courtyard and garden away for so long. The long path to the back of the courtyard opens up to a gorgeous area where you can sit and have your lunch amongst the statues of Buddha. The seating is spaced out, making it perfect for our purposes of a potentially embarrassing-if-overheard conversation. We ordered a toasted turkish bread each(very reasonable at $ 6.90) and a coffee before we snagged a seat. Our food didn’t take long to arrive, and I was delighted to see that despite the small price, the portions were huge! The coffee was also good. Our hour eventually wrapped up and I was so happy that I’d managed to please a friend and find a new hang out all at once. Java Coast Café is an inner city refuge for the 9am-5pm army and I would definitely recommend giving it a go if you’re looking for a little solitude in your lunch hour.

Ah, old Java Coast. The café where I spent my university years. Nowhere else will you find such a luxurious, leafy green, peaceful refuge to lounge in amidst the concrete jungle of Brisbane city. I had always fancied the understated, earthy staff, the yummy gourmet sandwiches, and their smooth coffees that seem to calm you, even while they’re recharging your brain battery. I decided to take a trip down memory lane and revisit my old stalwart café. As I was walking up to the dark green exterior of Java Coast, I could feel my heart warming with nostalgia. I glided up the barista with a big smile. She saw me approaching, slammed down her milk jug and jutted out a resentful«No» to my apologetic«oh, I’m sorry, are you guys closing now?». I ordered a take away cappuccino($ 3) and shrank back into a corner while I waited. I looked about at the other wait staff. They all looked downright miserable. Like drones. I felt sorry for them. What had happened here? I walked with my coffee down the garden path, past the buddhas, the modern straw chairs and the potted ferns, and sat in one of the city’s best kept secret gardens. There’s plenty of tables and chairs to sit down at, and the architecture of the buildings surrounding the space frame it perfectly. It was just as blissful as I remembered it. I like to think the wait staff were having a bad day. All of them. All at once. Even if the wait staff were, hypothetically, constantly gruff, I’d still recommend coming here. The outdoor courtyard is a refuge I’m so thankful to have in the middle of the otherwise sweltering hot, humid city.
