Point Walter is a fantastic place for a family picnic or outing. It’s a sprawling parkland on the banks of the Swan River with plenty of things to keep you and whichever family members you have with you occupied. There’s a walking path along the river, starting at the sandbank and winding through the bush back in the direction of Melville. On the rare occasion that I have been in the mood for training-montage-from-the-80’s style physical exercise, I have taken jogs and done numerous push ups along this path, which it’s great for. There are some limestone cliffs overlooking the Swan River along this path that I remember kids used to jump off when I was little but I’m not sure how safe this is and I haven’t seen anyone do it for years. Back at the Point, you’ll find a jetty that is often full of fishermen and a café that overlooks a playground. This is great, as you can easily get yourself a table where you can watch your kids go nuts, while still being able to enjoy a civilised coffee. Dotted along the riverfront, you’ll find shaded picnic tables and barbecues, making this a great place for big family get togethers.

I’ve been living in Mosman Park for a while now and have looked out at the sandbar in Bicton so many times, pondering as to its whereabouts. One Sunday as the tiredness kicked in and I found myself with nothing to do I went in search of the sandbar adn came acrss Point Walter Reserve, what a treat. It is a huge parkland with multiple public barbecues, parking spaces and picnic spots. You can walk along the full length of the sandbar. How wet you get depends on where the tide is but thats all part of the bizarro world of the sandbar. making for a great picture. There is also a great diving spot off hte jetty for kids and adults alike. My best recommendation would be to come on a weekday evening when the crowds are otherwise occupied and you have the place to yourself.

Point Walter is a wonderful place to visit for a picnic, a bush walk or a nice dip during the hot summer months. It offers ample on site parking, plenty of space and a fantastic playground for the kids. Whether you bring a picnic, use the barbecue facilities or buy your food from Walter’s River Café, the reserve is a great place to relax. The view from Point Walter is lovely and the cool evening breeze which comes in during summer will keep the whole family cool. A great place to visit for an early dinner in summer where you are outdoors and not stuck in the house infront of a hot stove! Don’t forget the kids’ bathers and towels. There are outdoor showers to rinse off after a quick dip. Toilet facilities are also on-site.
