This used to be my go to place for dinner when I couldn’t be bothered making dinner. When I heard it was under new management I was pretty surprised and hot footed it down to check out the new menu. I was instantly struck with how little had changed on the menu. I then noticed that my favourite dishes had been somewhat ‘dumbed down’ or westernised for whatever reason. Long gone was my favourite spinach naan as well. Oh well, I pressed ahead and ordered a few dishes with a side of garlic naan and waited patiently for my takeaway to be ready. The food came out pretty quick smart, almost a little too quick. When I got home and began to serve I noticed the meat was extremely dry. It was so dry I could tell just by looking at it. Nevertheless I gave it a shot but I can’t say I was impressed. Sure, the new owners give you more meat than what would previously be offered but it is dry, stringy and tasteless. I won’t be ordering from here again.

As a general rule, I usually get takeaway from Indian restaurants and I have not had great dine-in experiences. Bay Leaf would be an exception to this rule though. The service is fun, friendly and reasonably fast although not so fast that you question whether they just re-heated your meal in the microwave. I love the sauces, they are simply delicious and full of flavour. The chicken I had was juicy and tender. I highly recommend eating in but I am sure takeaway from here is a fine option too.

If you want some curry that is mad value for your coffers, you just got to hit up Bay Leaf on Sangate Road. The atmosphere inside is great, and the staff were buzzing around making sure every one of their customers were happy. We were seated pretty quickly and our waiter was such a funny and delightful man. Unsure of what to get he suggested we get the banquet for two that was only $ 40, so we did it. We got two naan breads that were fresh, hot and full of that garlic-cheese goodness, followed by our choice of two curries that were robust in sauce and generous in meat and vegetables. By the time we finished our curries with rice we were almost bloated. However we did save some space for the Gulab Jamun(sweet milk dumplings) at the end. It this was America and we had to tip, I would do it no questions asked. Our service, food, value for money and total experience was awesome. I was so glad I had money left over to keep.
