Its a great place to go on an evening out with friends, and when I went it was a well busy establishment! It was great to know that you could occupy tables with reservations so long as you cleared off the table by the time the booked patrons arrived. They had a great range of drinks, which though were a little pricey, made for some fun choices to choose from. I only stayed long enough for a drink, but I would like to go back and sample some of the food.

I went on a Thursday night and they had a nice acoustic set going on. Great bar staff and very friendly. Order at the bar and they will bring it to you. Very good wine selection and also seemed very knowledgeable of the local SA wines but willing to bring in more. Some great beers on tap as well. They will give you a taste so just ask! A very open décor with high tables and stools. Didn’t try the food but will try it next time when I come back! Also, the free WIFI is always a plus.

Seemingly one of the only places in town open on the first weekend of 2015, so we decided to give Mylk a try. There was 5 of us so we went with tapas, of which there was a fairly good selection. Lack of table service was a bit of a downer, but the staff were friendly enough. I got all the vego tapas options– haloumi, dolmades, and corn & zucchini fritters. The fritters were amazing, as was the almond pesto they came with. Dolmades were fine, though I have a feeling they were not made in-house but taken from a tin. Haloumi was slightly disappointing as it was quite oily– though I will never turn down fried cheese!

Working near by, I thought It was time to check out this place. So I popped in for a take-away coffee to both get my caffeine hit and scope out this place as a potential future — lunch spot and/or knock off drinks haunt. The service & product I received from this quick transaction has firmly secured it as NOT one of those future places. Myself and my colleague walked in and stood at the bar waiting for what appeared to be The Manager and a Staff Member having an altercation. Something small but a conversation that should not be had in front of customers, let alone a conversation to keep customers waiting. Once their«chat» was over, we did not even receive a «hi» or a «hello» or a «sorry about that» but a very cold«what can I get you?» I ordered a «take away double shot espresso» and was met with the blankest of blank stares. I felt like I had just spoken in Chinese. I repeated myself but changed it up a little«an espresso but with an extra shot» more blank stares. Eventually she quizzically asked«is that a short black?» I responded, «yes, but with two shots of coffee instead of one». No apology or acknowledgement or for the confusion just a «that’s $ 4.50» I handed over my money and my colleague then ordered — a «large take away latte» and received the same response«that’s $ 4.50» she too paid her money. After a few seconds I asked, «sorry, I just want to double check, should have our coffees been the same price?» I felt like because of the earlier confusion perhaps I had been over-charged. Because surely, how can 2 shots of coffee with no milk &2 shots of coffee with a large amount of milk cost the same? Who I assume was«The Manager» chimed in with«Well they both have 2 shots of coffee so yeah they are the same price» Call me crazy, but milk is not free right? I made a comment along the lines of «ohh ok, that’s interesting» «The manager» then shot back«well that’s the cost» I apologised and said«I’m sorry, I was just a little confused, we normally go to a place across the street(every single day!) and I get the same order for $ 3.20. We thought we would pop in to give you guys a try and I just thought it was unusual for both of our orders to cost the same, despite the large amount of milk» The Manager flatly replied«well your lucky to get that across the street then aren’t you» He then very condescendingly showed me the take-away cup with the two shots of coffee in it and said«that’s what you wanted right?» I felt embarrassed, belittled, undervalued & miss-understood throughout the entire transaction. And to top off the experience, the coffee itself was full of coffee grounds. They missed an opportunity to gain a very regular and repeat customer.

If there is no table service maybe it would be a good idea to put a little note on the tables outside to say so. After about 10 minutes I went inside to see what was going on and the waitress really wasn’t too concerned at all. Bad start! Perfunctory service but the zucchini fritters weren’t bad and the chips were nice. Just a bit lacking enthusiasm and the desire to please which is a shame.

On a cold night my friend and I were discussing how all the typical night out drinks are cold! I wanted a drink that wouldn’t chill my bones, and when we arrived at Mylk Bar, I asked if they would make us some Irish coffees so we’d stay warm. They put spiced rum into lattes and it made our night! The ladies at the bar were very helpful and friendly and didn’t shy away from our unusual request.

I’m with Chloe R, the spelling of Mylk is just plain strange(I checked google, and it’s a middle English spelling of milk, but not sure how that fits with the modern Americana theme of the food?) The Milk Bar theme is nicely executed, for the most part, complete with«headline style» front pages and bags of lollies for sale at the counter. The décor wins a most improved award — its predecessor, the late and not at all lamented Strata Bar, was the definition of a dive, and that strip of Flinders St is in dire need of some decent dining options. The food was fine, and I thought very good value — I went the zucchini fritter and chips for $ 9.50(the chips were crinkle cut, a cute retro touch) with a token gesture of a side salad, and my friend was happy with her burger. There’s a decent selection of beers on tap and wine glasses came in small or large– its handy to know if you’ve had a bad day at the office you can just get a big glass to guzzle on and save a second trip to the bar :-)The décor is fun and comfy — I liked the padding on the stools and warm wooden tables. And the staff were efficient and friendly, which is always a plus. A nod to its sports bar past is the tv in the corner, and the music playing was that kind where all you can discern is a «whompa whompa» bass — not exactly conducive to a relaxing lunch conversation. In some ways the Mylk Bar seems to be having a bet each way… mostly a quirky retro American bar, but with its bogan roots still showing just a bit. It was absolutely buzzing on the Thursday I visited, which suggests that the CBD crowd are glad to have a more budget friendly option than the Adina(sidenote: changing the name from Medina to Adina seems just as odd to me as spelling Milk as Mylk). But overall, the Mylk Bar is a welcome addition to the Flinders St precinct, and a good value option for when you want to wash down your lunch with something stronger than a coke zero. I think for the purpose of this review I’ll sign off as Mychelle C ;-)

Mylky Bar. Just like these cats, I’ll put a y wherever I want. Anyhow, I have a few points to make: 1. the food is pretty goddamn good. you pin a pickle on top of my burger and I’m a happy girl. that sounds bad, but its true. 2. If my burger is served to me by a hot waitress, then I’m even happier. 3. If I get to eat my burger while listening to a live jazz band, then I’m the happiest girl there ever was. Its a pretty friendly vibe in ye olde Mylky Bar and I was pleased with the service I received. Somebody spiked the milkshakes here too!!! Yay for the alcoholic milkshakes phenomenon, now I can be a kid and an adult at the same time.

Came here with a group of 7 for lunch on a Tuesday and the place was quite packed. The interior of the venue looks great — the black and white leather seats in the middle and the fake grass out the front are fun and funky. The food was good — I had the pulled pork burger which came with crinkle cut(yay!) hot chips and aioli dipping sauce. Others in the group had the zucchini fritters, the lamb salad and the popcorn chicken and it all looked quite good. Prices were about usual for pub fare. All in all, a pleasant early-week lunch with great company. Would definitely go back for a group lunch again.

I was so excited when I heard Mylk Bar opened, finally something cool and trendy in my white collar part of the city. We ventured there for lunch, despite hearing below average reports and I promised to keep an open mind. The décor is great and service albeit friendly was a little slow — given the location they will need to speed it up because most office workers have a standard hour lunch. I enjoyed a cheese burger and fries(perfectly presented on a skateboard ramp looking plate!) which was good, it wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad. I’d visit again, and after all those bad reports could just be teething issues!

Oh dear, the spelling of «milk» is not the only thing that this place misses the mark on unfortunately. The interior design is unique and follows trend with the rest of the exposed brick, high metal stools, wooden floorboard, crates behind the bar look that most bars are going for now days. But the black and white theme, fake grass and bi-fold windows opening out onto Flinders St, had me at hello. The wine list is impressive and there isn’t a bad list of boutique brews, but nothing game changing. Today we ordered: Garfish with chips and salad for $ 16.50 — good value if done right(unfortunately the fish was rubbery, chips undercooked and the aoili was the highlight) Chicken caesar wrap for $ 9.50 — bargain but too oily, soft chips and lacking in a salad filling. Bar service is incredibly friendly and efficient however we waited over 20 minutes for our meals to come out at lunch when it was reasonably quiet. Add on to that the fact that at this stage no food is available from 7am-12pm or 3−5pm and I feel the concept of turning an old Milk Bar concept into a cool bar, restaurant has lost the essence of the need for«convenience.» This place is in it’s 1st week of operation and I’m definitely going to give it a go in a couple of months to see how things iron out because as Liz A said, Flinders St needs a bit more hipness and booze injected into it and these guys could just do it!

Mylk Bar is a peculiar-looking venue. If you took an upmarket European café, a boutique hotel, and an R&B club, and mooshed them all together to create one big ball of café/hotel/nightclub, I think the result would look something like this. Great: the rustic brick detail on the bar and walls, the atmospheric lighting and the grassed-in seating area out front. Odd: the bright blue nightclub lights in the rear booths, the aluminium-looking bar top, and the prominently placed smoke machine and ATM. The clientele appear to be mainly young drunk women spilling things and people who park their flashy cars in no standing zones. They have an excellent wine list with a multitude of wittily titled reds, and the menu is a mix of Aussie pub fare, Americana, and some delicious sounding tapas. What I need is a rundown of the vision for this place. Did they imagine a combination of cosmopolitan types drinking Gewürztraminer in the front area, and kids bumping and grinding to Usher in back with Rum and Cokes? Because that’s like hanging a bunch of chicken carcasses in the front window of a vegetarian restaurant: sometimes you just have to choose a side. The staff are friendly and seem very passionate about this new place, which bodes well for their success. And God knows Flinders Street needed a life injection. Rock on Mylk Bar, you misspelling visionaries.
