Mushroom Man’s Mushroom Shop

Mushroom man is the go to place for mushrooms in the central markets. I think it’s pretty amazing that they can operate a business that only sells mushrooms and mushroom related items. We regularly get large swiss browns to make mushroom parmigiana (ask me for the recipe), tiny buttons for Korean BBQ, Truffles for the special occasions and oysters, shiitake, enoki and pines when they are in season.
They also have a great range of mushroom seasoning’s. One that is great is the orange coloured mushroom salt which is amazing over mushrooms with some poached eggs and spinach and bacon for breakfast. They do tastings on Friday nights and Saturdays and are always friendly and attentive.

So what is there to say about a mushroom shop? Well, I know you are thinking, «Yeah Anita, whatever, you can buy many different mushrooms there». But alas, not only can you buy a wide variety of species of mushrooms; you can also purchase all sorts of seasonings, oils and black garlic that compliment the mushroom. This is the one stop mushy shop!
Think of mushrooms as your flavoursome hearty friend when you are just not up for a meat dish. Mushrooms can be the star of a meal; especially when you venture into the more adventurous kinds such as Pine, Morel and Black Fungus.
My thoughts are when you are trying out different kinds of mushrooms, you have to be patient. Eating mushrooms is like sampling fine wines, each have different bold flavour profiles and you will eventually become accustomed to it. In fact, you will appreciate it and start to taste how the flavours of the same species change with the seasons.
This Mushroom Man knows his stuff, if you are wanting to try something new ask the staff and they can advise on cooking methods and recipes. In fact, check out their website for a great selection of recipes.
The seasonings and oils sold at this store are truly designed by someone with a great palate. For starters, check out the ‘Mushroom Spice’ which tastes almost Mediterranean with paprika, truffle salt and herbs. I have actually put this spice on everything; chicken, veggies and mushrooms.
We can not forget about truffles can we? There is a fine selection of truffles at this store. White, black and all things seasonal from different destinations. If you have not tried truffles, well, you just have not lived yet. They are a husky, strong, smoky and earthy flavour that truly is something you have to try once in your life. Please be warned, do not be put off by the smell, they are pungent. But, again if you are willing, you will become accustomed to that as well. One of the best additions to pasta.
All in all, the Mushroom Man is your fungus destination in Adelaide. I don’t get my little friends from anywhere else. I know I will always find what I need in super high quality here.

Five stars for a mushroom shop eh? Seems strange? Yes, well it is… and maybe not entirely accurate since it has been a few years since I have been a local at the mushroom shop, but that is only because I am an ex-​pat Aussie now.
Great prices, great advice, reliable and super friendly, how else could a business survive so long just selling mushrooms…

I am another fan of the mushroom man, whose alter ego is Marco. The mushrooms are very fresh and there is a wide variety but there are always mushrooms on sale which are very well priced compared to your regular fruit and veg shop. Walking past the other day, I was drawn in by the smell of mushrooms gently frying, such a great aroma.
I am always fascinated by the strange looking and odd shaped Asian mushrooms, however I am more a devotee of the Swiss brown variety. As well as a wide variety of mushrooms, they specialise in truffles and truffle oils if you want to create something very gourmet.

This is a must for all mushroom fans.
The store offers quality produce to suit all budgets, from the humble button mushroom to wild mushrooms and luxurious gourmet mushrooms from around the world.
The stall’s showpiece is the finest of fine food, the truffle. Mushroom man offers cheaper alternative truffle products, but it’s worth forking out a little bit extra once in a while to create a real treat.
Sometimes Mushroom Man sells tasty truffles from Tasmania, and I always opt to buy Australian food where possible, and it regularly imports Asian, Italian and French truffles.
The Summer ones tend to be about a third of the price of winter truffles, but it’s still going to be more than Swiss Brown mushrooms.
If you’re as mad for mushrooms as me, instead of blowing $ 50-​$ 100 on a night out, push the boat out and have an extravagant night in with loved ones. Spoil them with a mouth-​watering truffle dish — and why not go the whole hog and throw in some wild mushrooms while you’re at it, all thanks to Mushroom Man’s Mushroom Shop.

Anyone who doesn’t like mushrooms, get out. Just get out.

1) Although they are pricier, they are more flavoursome, so you don’t have to buy as many for a dish like a risotto.

Sometimes I like to fool myself into thinking that the vegetables at the supermarket taste just as good as what I could get at the Central Markets. It isn’t true. Mushroom Man is proof.
