Working so close to the markets, I always try to go different, shops in the markets, and one that was on my list was Let Them Eat. I am by no means a vegetarian, but good vegetarian food is hard to pass up. I got the sweet potato and baked ricotta pie w/2 salads — the lunch special. I got the spiced chickpea salad and the risoni salad(I am a sucker for risoni). And I have to say — it was really good. The pie is good without being amazing. But the servings are more than generous, the staff are incredibly nice, and my pie also had caramelized onion on top — my fav! I did take this back to my office to eat, so I didn’t eat there — but it was delicious and I would recommend for anyone looking for a lunch option.

I’m a regular Central Market lunch goer and have been walking past this place for months. I’ve always thought the food looked good yet had no idea how to order due to lack of menus, pricing or a ‘how to order’ board. Anyway, I decided to give it a go and chose a risotto pie and two varieties of salad. It was quite delicious overall. I also had a freshly squeezed juice that I was really impressed with. I’ll go back to try the patties everyone raves about sometime.

I had a chocolate cupcake from here, which was vegan and looked delicious however it had a strange aftertaste. It tasted old, like it had been sitting, uncovered, in a fridge with other food for a day or so.

I first experienced Let Them Eat as a food van at Womad, then discovered I could visit them on Sundays at the Goodwood Farmers Market. When I found out they have now opened at the central market I actually did a bit of a happy dance. My own cooking is on the Irish side of bland, so I love to mix up my own efforts with food made by people more gifted at playing with spice jar than I am! Let Them Eat is an exception to the«if it tastes good, spit it out» rule of healthy eating… even Michelle Bridges is a fan — they catered for her 12WBT finale that was held here in Adelaide recently. Their shop in the central market arcade means that healthy lunches just got really easy for anyone based in the CBD. I usually get three mains — middle eastern cauliflower fritter, curried chickpea burger and pumpkin and sweet chili risotto pie — and two salads in one small container — my favourites are the mung bean and the carrot and quinoa for $ 17 and that is three days of healthy lunches, all sorted. The price per meal if you do it that way equates quite favourably with what you’d get at a sanger bar. If you are looking to nix carbs or gluten, pretend you’re a healthy gourmet at your next dinner party or just want to surprise yourself by finding out how good vego food can taste, go and check it out!
