What a gem. Central Markets are full of great food. But this place is a stand out. The charming host makes the difference: a glance at their menu, he offers you a date. From there he is a perfect host: polite, charming and lightly theatrical. I had the mint tea — sweet and refreshing and just what I needed to help the meaty chakchouka on its way. The chakchouka was delicious — beefy, fragrant and with the addition of fresh Harissa, spicy. A very satisfying breakfast! I wish I had a place like this where I live!

Very good service and very good food. This is the real deal Algerian food, flavoursome and full of spices. I ordered couscous with chickpea and broadbean salads and it was divine, so filling but I just couldn’t stop eating! The meals here are perfect if its a cold day, you’re very hungry, or if you are after a really flavoursome meal!

Not sure if there are other Algerian restaurants in Adelaide, but I do like Le Souk as it is comfort, nourishing food to me. The cooking is homely and the service is warm. The proprieter, Abdul Aziz always has a friendly smile and welcomes each customer and there appears to be lots of regulars who dine there. I like to sit on the bench facing the kitchen as I am usually there for lunch on my own on a work day. Go for the signature dish of couscous(lamb preferably) and mint tea with toasted pine nuts. The cuisine of Algeria is a distinct fusion of Arab, Moorish and Berber cuisines. Therefore, some dishes may seem familiar — couscous, slow cooked(tajine) dishes, harissa. However, as with any cuisine, Algerian cuisine differs slightly from region to region. Le Souk’s version is perfect comfort food for me, full of spice(but not spicy), and the harissa is mild but flavoursome. If couscous is not your thing, there are other options like brown rice, beans, salads. Lots of salads. It’s also veg/vegan friendly. If their mild harissa is to your taste, it’s $ 9 for a take home jar. Hubby actually likes the harissa as it’s not spicy and doesn’t kill his taste buds. While I prefer a bit of a chilli kick, the harissa here still appeals to me because it’s aromatic and fresh(made every 2−3days vs commercially made ones). I buy quite a bit of vega takeaway as well, usually the falafel(12 for $ 11, can stay fresh in the fridge for 72 hours)) and make my own humous at home. They do sell a pack with falafel, humous and tabouleh. 150th review on Unilocal!:-D

One word. SUPERB!!! A hidden gem. Who knew the BESTMEALINTOWN would be at a stall in the market. If you’ve never had Algerian or North African cuisine, this is where to try it. If you have? Le Souk will spoil you for anything else. Breakfast or lunch. And do not miss the desserts, or the Mint tea with toasted pine nuts. Linger. Savor. Enjoy. Be spoiled. Be delighted.
