Yikes… One flew over the Cuckoos Nest with this place. From the photos and the street view of this place it is cool, with an element of warehouse grunge/hipster stylings. But that’s about as far as the«it has so much potential» goes. Friday night 10pm, this place was empty, apart from a patron hosting a small gathering that meant that the entire bar had to listen to her music from her iPod the whole time. Chloe steps up to the bar and proceeds to wait 10 minutes to be served. Not a problem if there was a line up to the bar, but no this place was a mental ward kind of quiet. She is then served and told«why get a cocktail for $ 5 more when you can get a whole jug of the stuff for $ 15?» Things maybe looking up she thought… No joke, 10 minutes later still standing at the bar are Chloe’s jugs of cocktails(Long Island Iced Tea and Elderflower Power), minus a few key ingredients, are served. They walk across a sticky floor, to some sticky tables in the sticky black nightclub. Chloe sips her Elderflower Cocktail to only taste sugar and soda with some apple chunks in it. Her partner sips his Long Island Iced Tea to only taste soda and perhaps a hint of rum? Party of 2 proceeds to exit. Somehow this story just works better in 3rd person. Perhaps I should have been drunker? Perhaps I should have appreciated the cheap sugar water for the value it was? But really… Adelaide does better than this and I’m not not surprised why it was dead on one of the busiest nights of the week.

I had my 21st birthday party at cuckoo and I really think it is the best place for functions. You can hire out the venue for free, as long as you have a bar tab. This is great because it means you can spend your money on alcohol. The drinks that they have are already reasonably priced, so if you decide to go with subsidized drinks, friends and family only have to pay a few dollars. The indoor area is quite large, with much room to stand or sit. There are quirky little booths, where you can sit for a quiet chat. The walls are red with an interesting pattern painted on them. This is a nice change to the usual black walls of most clubs When having a function, Cuckoo can provide your food. This includes a range of snacks such as spring rolls and wedges. They also have a DJ and a projector incase someone decides to embarrass you with horrible baby photos. When it is not hired out, Cuckoo is a great place to chill and have a few cocktails. On Thursdays they have cheap cocktails and cocktail jugs. Definitely a great place to go for pre-drinks.

Cuckoo is just down from the Crazy Horse, so you can sit out the front and watch the strippers strutting past to start their shifts. We had a lot of fun watching these birds(get it, birds?) passing by with their long 100% natural ponytails and large tote bags. Cuckoo is a bit of a hit with the younger set because the cocktails are sweet and can be bought in cheap jugs. The kids also enjoy this venue because it is very dark inside so they can grope and vomit at their leisure without fear of camera phones. I had a Jasmine and Vanilla Martini last time I was there and unfortunately I’ll have to have another because I was too drunk to know whether it was good or not. I like this bar. Great place for functions, our friend had a party here and the canapes were surprisingly delicious. The Bird is indeed The Word.

To the uninitiated Cuckoo is a good little chill spot on Hindley street where the patrons are generally happy to sit and sip beers and watch the craziness go by. To the regulars, Cuckoo is a electronic music venue. You don’t see big gigs or artists names advertised at Cuckoo, because the guys running the place like to keep it low key. If you happen to stumble in on a gig night, you probably wouldn’t even notice. The DJ will be there spinning tracks and mixing beats while a few techno connoisseurs bop and dance in appreciation. No huge queues or mosh pits. Just people kicking back and loving it. Cuckoo also releases disc and vinyl music compilations of visiting or associated artists. Well worth a listen on the website if you want to get an idea of the ambience of the place. The drinks are also good here. Decent specials run weekly, and the cocktails are reasonably priced.

Cuckoo is a pleasant late-night club where the crowd isn’t too defined. It isn’t quite hipster, not as sleazy as Supermild, not as *mildly* threatening as Red Square. Cuckoo is just a nice, unassuming place to drink, dance and chat. Grey on the outside and red on the inside(like a sick pigeon), Cuckoo is surprisingly cosy. Hanging lamps, couches and red walls, decorated with illustrations done in a continuous white line. Recently Cuckoo has been hosting the odd live music gig, which is a nice addition to their usual range of house/techno/dance DJs. Keep an eye out for drink specials advertised on their Facebook page — jugs of long island ice tea and longnecks.
