The German Store & Cafe

Heard that this location has closed! No more German food on the Peninsula? I had been here twice and enjoyed it both times.

German Store and Café is good and serves my German food needs. The Jäger Schnitzel is delicious and the cucumber salad is so damn good but spätzel was ok. I was here a few months ago and I remember it being a little different and more flavorful. They have a good beer selection also! We also had their bee sting cake and it was SOOOO good!
The service was good once they realized we were there. I would recommend this place.

⁶⁄₁₂ was my first time here, and it was definitely a mixed experience. The staff made you feel at home with their casual style, so that was nice. But there were a few problems with the food– 1, my mother ordered an appetizer for her main course, but it was brought out before even our table appetizer got to the table. 2, the cook was apparently new, which wasn’t a problem for us, but he (?) first cooked the wrong wurst for our currywurst, then as he was fixing it he remembered to tell our server they were out of their special curry sauce. 3, this was after we all waited quite a while for our dishes, and they all came out at very different time. They fixed this by just giving us curry powder and heated ketchup which was delicious, but a slight letdown.
The high points were high– the food tasted GREAT. We went here to have a change from the Bier Garden in Norfolk, and I was very impressed with the flavor of this place’s food. And they offered a military discount which was great as well for me, and makes me want to come back. I’ll just be thinking about it a bit before I go next time.
There was no compensation for any of the mistakes, but there was also very limited staff. Seeing as we were 1 of 2 tables though, just a bit disappointing. Maybe next time will be better.

Spetzl was bland. Jaegersnitzel was very good. Service was so-​so. Little bit pricey.

I have been to the german store and café before it switched ownership. I visited today without knowing that the change had been made. All I wanted was a nice order of gulasch. I even called ahead to make sure that they had some, seeing that the previous times I had tried to make the 30 minute drive down they didn’t have it.
However, I have never been more disappointed. The customer service was «okay» at best regarding the waitress who seemed to not to care to be there. And the gulasch was NOT the gulasch that I was served last time. Their menu specifies that the gulasch is made with BEEF and ONIONS. There is no mention of PORK or BELL PEPPER in the description. I have never once had a goulash made with pork, and probably would have decided against ordering it had I known that. Goodness, what if someone who CANNOT eat pork were to order this without the menu stating it had pork. That’s just entirely wrong.
When I called to verify that the goulash had pork and maybe I accidentally received the gulaschsuppe instead, I was blown off by the woman who had answered the phone. Apparently I’m wrong and that is always how it’s been made. I honestly doubt my memory is that terrible. Nope, I will not be visiting this establish again.

WOW!!! The food is awesome. The service is great and friendly. The second time I went there they remembered what I had the first time and by the fourth visit I felt like family. I have had spatzle, red cabbage, potato pancakes, struddle and more at other German restaurants but they are so much better here. My absolute favorite is the spatzle. Some of the older reviews are negative but this place changed hands last summer. The owners and waitresses in there now are friendly service oriented and did I mention the fantastic food? I will be back over and over.
If you must have a negative, they are closed Mondays like so many restaurants. I never figured that out??? If I want to eat two or three times on the other days, why do I want to starve on Monday???

What a great place to have lunch. Good food, great atmosphere and wonderful staff. Plus the goodies on the side shelves are really neat and make for tasty treats. I enjoyed the pepper schnitzel (my iPad autocorrects German spellings so I had to use the American spelling.). I walked away full and satisfied that this is one of the best lunches I have had in a long time. The atmosphere is wonderful thank you for an amazing meal. I will definitely come here again.

Very casual dining experience. Delicious food; basic german cuisine. I had the wiener schnitzel with spaetzle and sour kraut. The kraut was particularly delicious! Beer selection was lacking… beer list included tap beers but was told tap hasnt been working for a month or so. Also struck out on several bottled beers that were listed but out. Service was decent. Would definitely go back but will keep an eye out for other german restaurants as well.

Food is excellent as is the service. Went there on Sunday after church and found that they are closed on Sunday and Monday although the website said they were open. A little disappointed we went to another German restaurant called Das Waldcafe. Looking forward to visiting the German Store again.

Great experince tonight and the past two visits. The new owner has restored the old standards. I will be back soon. I am glad we made it in for the Octoberfest special roasted ham hocks. Very good!

I’m born and raised in Germany and the Jaegerschnitzel is the best one I have had this side of the Atlantic. The one waitress there was behind, but extremely courteous.

To tell you how much I didn’t care for this place, I finally created a Unilocal account just to put the word out. Went here with my family on a Sunday for lunch. Dingy décor and smoky interior from the lack of ventilation from the kitchen. Grandmother wanted hot tea that was clearly on their menu and the waitress claimed they don’t do it. Then huffed and puffed and found random tea bags 5 min later. Speaking of the menu, you can’t get chicken for your schnitzel as the menu claims and the salad has a dressing on it that is standard but not mentioned.
To top it all off, my grandfather picked up the bill for 6 folks at this $$ restaurant and didn’t get as much as a thank you from the waitress or any other employee when we left. Parents said they had last been here a couple years back and had no where near this experience or bland food.
