History

Established in 1961.

Rebuilt in 1961 after a four story victorian hotel known as“The Breakers” burned down on the same site in 1958. The Sands by the Sea Motel has overgone many changes throughout the years and seen decades of families growing larger and larger and always coming back generation after generation, together. In 2012 the Sands underwent extensive improvements and the new owners intend on upholding and increasing its reputation while preserving much of the nostalgia that the Sands by the Sea Motel has always been known for.

I’ve never given one star. Many reviews mention two things, the staff and cleanliness.
The staff member Paul greeted us and was a true asset to the motel. Now the cleanliness issue. Yes it appears very clean. However when we got home we both noticed that the bottoms of our white socks were black. Disgusting. I won’t get into the torture rack beds.

We stayed here on the off season (early October 2014) for one night and it was great! It’s right across the street from the beach I mean — ACROSS THE STREET! We purposely booked an ocean view room on the end so we could hear the waves — so cool (can you tell we’re from out-​of-​town?).
The two young girls we met at the desk (one that checked us in and one that checked us out) were very sweet, warm and accommodating.
The room was VERY clean (I am a freak about clean and I checked VERY carefully and I can attest — this place was really clean). This is a no-​frills motel so if you’re expecting some luxurious city high-​rise accommodations, this place is not for you. It was perfect for what we needed.
We would like to come back in the summer sometime.

I really wanted to give this place 5 stars but the cigarette smoke killed it! They allow guests to smoke on the decks outside the rooms. Every time I tried to enjoy the ocean breeze I was hit in the face with smoke. Too bad because although this place is old and dated it is clean and run by pleasant staff. The location is unbeatable. I came with my wife and two small children for Father’s Day. The kids loved the warm pool and we had a great time.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a weekend getaway and loved it! The room was spacious and clean! We had a king bed with a pull out sofa couch. The bathroom was very clean, the refrigerator worked perfectly and the pool was a lot of fun!
The staff is SO nice and recommended where we should park. Sands by the Sea is next to EVERYTHING! We had such an amazing time and will be visiting York again! We will absolutely be staying at Sands by the Sea!

My husband and I stayed here with our two kids for one night. Our room was clean and tidy. It was a small room, but perfectly adequate for one night. You can’t beat the location of this hotel — across the street from Short Sands Beach and a quick walk to downtown. I would definitely recommend staying here if you are just looking for an inexpensive overnight close to the beach.

We recently stayed here for a long weekend. The motel is very basic, but fairly clean. Great location right across the street from the beach, and near all the shops. The only thing that was a negative was that the pool was very mirky/​cloudy the entire weekend… needless to say we did not go in. Lots of kids in the pool so that may have been why :) I would give it 3.5 stars if that were an option here… its a good place to stay for a relatively low price.

Nice motel, great location across from Short Sands Beach, very basic but CLEAN accommodations. We had to ask for shampoo and hair dryer, but the friendly staff provided us with these items with no problem. The staff really makes this place great.
