STAYAWAY! This place has horrible and I mean horrible service. We’ve been frequenting this place and we noticed all the staff quit but now I understand why. The chef’s wife(the only Japanese lady there left) seems to have no happiness and is always angry. You can tell by looking at her face that she’s just an unhappy person. Ever since she started showing up at the restaurant all their old staff left and Kaz doesn’t seem very happy either. It’s one thing to be a bad employer/boss but you really shouldn’t be managing in the service industry if you don’t know service and raising your voice towards your customer just because you’re stressed from being understaffed is not acceptable! That’s what she did. We got screamed at because her staff took an order that was incorrect and she was upset that I didn’t know her rules. They’ve been making many mistakes on our orders recently(prob because they are understaffed), especially when I order to-go, and never have I gotten an apology. It’s always, «oh come get it. Someone forgot to pack it.» As a restaurant owner maybe you need to relearn how to treat your customers. We are not your employees and as they seem to keep leaving, in no time you’ll have no customers eating there. We frequented but won’t be back.

I still love the sushi. «But!» They are short staffed and every seat at the sushi bar is empty but yet you sit and wait. No one comes over to offer you any sort of apology for the wait. I find that extremely rude. I watched two couples walk out because of customer service. Sorry… Not worth the wait. It’s not Sasabune that’s for sure.

Great sushi, but a small restaurant. I also really like their tempura. Just double check their hours around the holidays. The restaurant sometimes shuts down at Thanksgiving for a week to allow the staff time to travel to Japan to see their families.

This is my bfs favorite sushi place and I must say that I like it! I went on a Thursday night and most of the customers. From what I could see. Were all regulars… which is pretty cool. It was a nice vibe because it seemed like the owner knew everybody. The sushi is really good. We had uni, unagi, bluefin, amaebi, mirugai, yellowtail, snapper, mackerel… It was all excellent. We also got the chawanmushi. The texture of it was great but it could have used more salt. The owner and another sushi chef prepared all of our items and were super nice and polite. Will definitely try to come back again(:

Love their combo meals and the fact u can get a mini sukiyaki as part of your combo! Their uni was fresh and the place is owned by a Japanese owner, so the food is legit.

The best, most authentic sushi around… If you’re looking for quality this is the place. Hands down… Kaz and his hard working staff are always able to assist you.

I’m a big fan of this place. My family has been here several times. The staff is always friendly and greets each person as they walk in. We’ve had both sushi and the combo plates of the menu. Off the menu, my personal favorite is the tempura. It’s super crisp and tasty. The food is brought out promptly, so everything is still hot. The spider rolls are also amazing. They’re also great for kids… they serve the kids food on really cute plate and bowls and have the kid sized silverware. This is a great place to take the family!

The sushi is tasty and reasonable prices. The hostess and sushi chief are always friendly. Will definitely come back. My 2 kids love this this too so that’s always a plus.

Heading back from Ashley Furniture(ghastly prices, by the way), we stopped by a random Japanese restaurant. It had a unique name and said«Japanese» on it. Can’t miss it inside the plaza. This is a smaller mom & pop shop, and I’m not 100% sure it was totally owned by Japanese people however this is America so as long as it’s good doesn’t mean it isn’t genuine. I mean certainly Chinese food is not really cooked by Chinese people either, but it’s still Chinese! We were quickly seated as the restaurant was practically empty our whole meal. It was kind of nice, like we rented out the whole place just for us to eat. :) We had A+ service because of it, and we weren’t «forgotten» like at other places. Tea was promptly refilled and we were checked up upon pretty often.(But not too often that it became cumbersome.) Akagi and Ikura Sushi came out first for us, I was pretty surprised since I had never had surf clam before(that I can remember). It seemed a little bit tough, but then I remembered it was clam, not squid. I think then, the consistency and texture was actually correct for the animal. The salmon roe sushi was as expected. I don’t know why I fancy it so much but I do! Lastly was the Anago Sushi, which is actually pretty rare on the menu.(Both the surf clam and the saltwater eel are, actually.) It was delicious, not overly salty or sweet, even with the eel sauce. I enjoyed it very much, would definitely come by just to order those again. The entrée finally appeared and we both ordered the same thing(which actually almost never happens). The Nabeyaki Udon. I didn’t know which udon to choose, only that in a recent Thrillist article which suggested that udon was super underrated and that one should explore them… So I did! Typically when I’m not sure what to choose, I go with the more expensive choices. This was one of those, as well as a different name, so I figured, hey, can’t go wrong. For my very limited experience of udon noodle soups, I’d have to say this was pretty good. It came with a poached egg(my favorite), and a few«toppings» for the noodles. I did feel that I got just a few too many noodles, but it was definitely filling and I did not feel that the amount of noodles overpowered the other elements in the stone pot. I was satisfied. Overall I would say this was a nice little gem to find. I think the selection of sushi was unique compared to other restaurants I have been to, I would consider returning(it’s kind of out of my way though) just to consume such fanciful eats. I’m not 100% sure about the udon, but I was definitely happy with it and I would eat it again. I will definitely use this one to compare all future udon soups. Great meal!

Here constantly. I have been coming here since I was a young child and now that I am grown my girlfriend and I are here constantly! I travel for work all over the state and have yet to have better sushi. The size of the rolls are one of my favorite parts; no need to stretch your mouth. Slightly slow service but completely worth it for the quality of the food. The head sushi chef is the owner so you can be insured quality food. Great for families, business meetings, dates, family dinners, and small get-togethers. Hope to be coming here for as long as possible. We love you, Maguroya!

If Unilocal offered a negative star system, I would be utilizing it. I have never experienced anything like this, and I hope I never do again. I am appalled at the customer service of this restaurant and I will never be returning. When I came in for lunch today With my friend, we ordered a few things including a spider roll. I knew right away that the spider roll tasted funny. When I let the sushi chef know(I was sitting at the sushi bar) he told me it was me and not his fish. I told him to go ahead and try it for himself because it was the worst tasting crab I had ever had. He proceeded to yell at me and tell me that I would regret saying that. I told him that I will never regret telling the truth. He continued on his rant while I was paying my bill and in the process managed to scare off the only other patrons in the restaurant. Good job! Horrible horrendous service. Beware.

I come here every year for my birthday, and my dad has been coming here for years. Loyal customers! Absolutely. But it’s because the quality of the food is amazing. I’ve been to my fair share of sushi bars restaurants, as have probably most of my fellow pescetarian friends. And trust, that I know how good this place is!!!

The good: nicely presented Japanese food. The bad: for the price, taste was so-so for my sesame chicken and salmon teriyaki combo. Had some of my daughter’s shrimp, same — just so-so. Usually there is a trade off of quantity and quality in terms of value. 3 stars for this restaurant as avg food, avg quantity, higher than should be prices.

What a cute authentic Japanese restaurant. I bet ninjas eat here too. Ordered sushi deluxe, edamame & iced green tea. Sushi deluxe($ 25.00): not the best sushi but it wasn’t bad. Edamame: served hot. Iced green tea: it tasted like green water :( They gave me a lot of wasabi. I was tempted to dare others to eat the wasabi. Great friendly service. The chef even came out to chat with us and answered questions. I like how they place the Japanese maneki-neko next to the aquarium. 3 stars! Maguroya is almost yummylicious!

Maguroya is one of my favorite sushi restaurants! My favorites are the yellowtail, red snapper, fatty tuna(toro), salmon, and Unagi(eel). Their sushi always tastes clean and bright and is smooth on the tongue. The people who work there are also very nice :) When I’ve had a long day like today — up at 5 am, worked late, went to the gym, and still not home after 8 pm – this is a meal that makes the day better! Every friend I’ve taken here has liked what they’ve ordered. I usually just get sushi but my friends have gotten rolls and liked those too. My only wish is that they were open more hours! Sometimes I have a sushi craving when they are closed and have to wait until a day and time they are open. Hands down the best sushi in YL :)

My new favorite spot for lunch, been there three times this week. I am addicted… I normally can’t finish my lunch plate, so I’ll take my food to go for a snack. Healthy choices n fresh fresh fresh. Can’t complain about the service either!

This place gets crowded fast! I came early with as reservation and there was nobody in the restaurant. After waiting outside for a couple of minutes, I walked in with my family and the place was packed! The service was a bit slow but it was probably due to the huge crowd that appeared as we walked in! Food-wise the spicy calamari was quite yummy :) and the salad was good. I ordered a combo plate with teriyaki salmon and sashimi. The teriyaki salmon was good but nothing spectacular. I wasn’t a huge fan of the sashimi. The tuna was a bit… hard? Too chewy? I’m not sure but it didn’t equate to yummy in my book. I did enjoy the tempura and the chicken though! AND, I loved those little cold spaghetti noodles! Totally gonna figure out how to make those. Overall a bit overpriced, but friendly and yummy food for the most part. Though I admit I probably wouldn’t make a huge effort to come back or show people this place, I’ll return if my family decides to eat here again.

What’s up with the serving size!!! It’s been years since we’ve been here because this place is just plain stingy and you don’t get your money’s worth. Well, nothing’s changed. For a $ 20 combination, we got a very petitte overcooked chicken breast, 5 tiny pieces of sashimi(I’m guessing each piece is a thin one square inch), and a decent bowl of sukiyaki. We also ordered the hamachi kama, which received raive reviews from some, and it was, what else, small. Not tiny, but nevertheless small. Because we weren’t satisfied, we ordered a couple of salmon and hamachi sushi. Surprise surprise that the sashimi is generously described as petitte. The fish barely covers the sushi rice, which is finger wide to begin with. I don’t get how they manage to do pretty good business. For the money and quality, I’ll take Oishi any day.
