Yakima Valley Tourism has been the area’s Destination Marketing Organization for over 50 years. Our organization also includes the Sports Commission, Convention Center, and Visitor Information Center.

Meet the Manager

John C.

Manager

John Cooper graduated from the University of Oregon. In addition, he is a 1998 graduate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute of Organization Management at U.C.L.A.

John is the President & CEO of the Yakima Valley Visitors and Convention Bureau, a position he has held since June 2007. Prior to that, he was CEO of Bellingham/​Whatcom County Tourism for fourteen years. Past professional experiences include being Executive Director of the Southern Oregon Visitors Association and the Corvallis Convention and Visitors Bureau.

I’ve never written a review for a Visitor’s Center, but this one deserves a special nod. The employees were as nice as nice can be. And helpful! Apparently this facility was recognized as the best Visitor’s Center in the Pacific Northwest.
It’s a cute looking place, offering gratis coffee and donuts (which came at just the right time of day for me.) If you plan to visit vineyards in Zillah, you might purchase the «Wine Trail Passport» for $ 10. You’ll get free entrée to several wineries and a number of discounts on purchases.

As the other reviewer said, you should stop by the visitor center before you do anything in the area. Planning your itinerary online is one thing. Having an idea of what you’d like to do is essential. But, if you really want to get some helpful advice and create a «do-​able» wine tasting or vineyard visiting itinerary, stop here!
In fact, it’s not just wine tasting schedules they help plan with, but much more! If you’re interested in hunting, biking, bird watching, kayaking, rafting, hiking, skiing, relaxing poolside, shopping, sight-​seeing, road-​tripping, or anything else in the area, they will be able to help you out. There knowledge is not limited to Yakima either!
They can help guide you about the Columbia River Gorge area, the Cascade Loop, White Pass, and much more!
I am very thankful I found this place as they were really able to help educate me more about the Yakima area and beyond.
Also, they sell carmels from the Copper Pot, a local delicious carmel maker.

This is a review for the Visitor Information Center that the bureau runs. It’s a very cute, «Tusan-​themed» building that is very easy to get to, since it is right off the highway.
The Center bills itself as your first stop in wine country, and, boy, are they right! Stop there before you go anywhere, and meet with a friendly wine country expert. She’ll help you generate a customized itinerary of vineyards and tasting rooms, which you will absolutely need. Without it (and her) you will be tortured by analysis paralysis… there are simply too many vineyards and tasting rooms to choose from.
Our expert helped us narrow down the field to the Rattlesnake Hills area, which is a younger wine region, and is therefore more fun (and cheaper!). We had an absolutely blast tooling around on country roads, drinking delicious rieslings and gewurztraminers and, oh, soooo many other varieties. The prices were great and the people were so friendly. So far, the Rattlesnake Hills area is our favorite wine region of the Northwest.
If you need a little more inducement to visit the Visitor Center, you should know that they have unbelievable free fruit. The pear juice will run down your chin and you won’t care.
