History

Established in 1920.

Kaehler Luggage was founded in 1920 on Chicago’s North Shore. While on the job, locksmith Walter Kaehler began receiving requests for new steamer trunks. Kaehler recognized a need and began to stock and sell these trunks in a small storefront in Evanston, IL. Throughout the decades Kaehler has transformed from a small locksmithing company to a premium travel outfitter. From our diverse beginnings selling locks, trunks, boats and motors to becoming one of the industry leaders in high quality travel products, travel has always been the heart of our business. Our history has allowed us to see travel shift from sea to rail to air and all the forms of luggage that have existed in between. Today, after 90 years and four generations of family retail, Kaehler Luggage is still managed under the Kaehler family name with six different Chicagoland locations.

I know this store has high quality merchandise, and for that reason, I drove to this store from Chicago to purchase a portfolio for my husband for Christmas. The item I purchased was beautiful, and expensive, as I had anticipated. What disappoints me, however, is that the imprinting of his monogram is not done correctly; the impression is deeper on one side than the other, and every time I look at it, that is what I see. Frustrating that I specifically went to this store to find something really special, and it is just not right.

I stopped into Kaehler’s during a sidewalk sale in Winnetka. The sales staff was friendly and attentive but not overbearing. There was a lot of beautiful women’s clothing and, because of the sale, the prices were good. I bought two cute summer dresses and think they’ll both be worn often. Plus, they both are in a wrinkle-​free fabric and should be perfect for travel. The luggage in the store is gorgeous — top-​notch quality and really terrific looking. When the time comes that I need a new bag, I’ll be headed back to Kaehler. I spoke to Mark in the luggage department and he was extremely knowledgeable. It’s sale time so if you’re looking for traveling attire and accessories, head over to Kaehler soon.

Great service for high end luggage. The prices are high end as well as you would expect. We were shopping for a large piece of luggage for our honeymoon and found the staff to be incredibly helpful and friendly. Nice Tumi collection without going into the city. We’ve been to the Luncoln Park store which was also a positive experience.

Great online store with customer support.
So I found Kaeher Luggage through their website
and saw that they had great clearance deals on some Tumi goods that I’ve had my eye on for a while. So I purchased an umbrella, toiletry case, and passport holder and chose the fastest shipping available. This would’ve added another $ 60.00 to my total, which I was fine with.
Anyway, after placing my order I get a call about 10 minutes later from the same gal who helped me over the phone earlier when I had a question about the umbrella. She let me know that the toiletry case I bought had just run out so I would have to pick something else.
Normally, this would be a red flag for me that I may be getting «up sold» on something more expensive after being shown sale prices, but she offered to discount the newer (and much nicer) version of my toiletry case. She also let me know that the free upgraded shipping would get the package to me in the same amount of time as the extra shipping I was going to pay for.
So I saved on the shipping, saved on the toiletry case (by getting the newest one cheaper than most folks), and got excellent communication and customer service from an online retailer, which never happens. Overall, I am pleased with what came in the mail and I am pleased with the level of service I received from Kaehler Luggage. I will buy again for sure.

I found Kaehler Luggage online when my boss’s Hartmann briefcase broke. Joseph worked with me every step of the way to get the bag fixed, and could not have been a better help! He was always quick to respond, and told me different options I had to fix the bag. The bag even ended up being LESS to fix then he originally quoted me! That never happens!
I will return to Kaehler when I need new luggage as my experience with Joseph was so great. I will recommend Kaehler (and Joseph) to anyone looking to purchase new luggage or get an existing piece fixed.

I had dropped of a leather duffle bag to have a zipper repaired, after already having another luggage store attempt to repair it after the said it could not be replaced. Kaehler not only replaced it making the bag functional again, the turn around time was amazing. Highly recommended for any luggage repair needs.

One of the wheels of a brand new suitcase purchased here came apart on its maiden voyage. Fortunately, it still had half a wheel, so it rolled just fine for the duration of the trip. Upon return, Kaehler agreed to have a spare wheel ready, and to bring the suitcase in for a quick fix. That’s when the other wheel fell off — the figurative one.
Strike 1: Not being able to find the wheel that had been promised.
Strike 2: Not offering to remove a wheel from any of the other 8+ Rimowa suitcases on display so that the customer would leave happy, and they could later put the promised replacement on the display unit.
Strike 3: Asking for the case to be left with them and picked up at a later date. It was made clear that Winnetka isn’t home, nor particularly convenient. When asked about shipping the wheel, I think the mental wheels fell off the guy who was purportedly trying to help.
Look, I’m not expecting some sort of amazing mind-​blowing experience. I thought of at least three different ways to remedy the situation without causing anyone added inconvenience; the two storekeepers could only say «leave it here and we’ll call when the repair guy gets in». Disappointing considering that luggage stores are like travel agents: lucky to be alive given the Internet.
Most boutiques like this are alive because — and only because — they offer stellar customer service. Take note, Kaehler,
has Rimowa now.

Was looking for a new carry-​on suitcase for my husband and was assisted by a very friendly and knowledgeable sales Associate Kaitlin Fletcher. While I didn’t buy anything at that point I left knowing that we would be be back to Kaehler to by a carry-​on.
I highly recommend as a place to purchase a bag that you won’t be replacing year after year.
