It’s hard to miss this place driving down I-40. We were doing just that, driving from spending a couple days in Asheville to my dad’s house in Gibsonville. The huge tanks and the monstrosity of this place that isn’t surrounded by anything was hard to miss. My dad stated that he had never been, as he recently moved to the area, but he and my stepmom had tried the beers and they were good. We decided to do the tour the following Friday — $ 10 cash per person, including beers(3 types — good sized glasses) and a souvenir cup. We also got a bottle opener when we were there but not sure if that’s standard. Walking up, they checked our IDs, took our money and stamped our hands. We sat outside in the beer garden, which is quite nice! Water features, landscaping, etc. Coming from the town where Anheiser-Busch has their international HQ and that also has a thriving craft brew community, I have been on my fair share of beer tour. This one was different though. First, the brew master himself conducted it. Wow, he was knowledgeable! They only make German style lagers here that adhere to a special rule, so it is a very pure way to make beers. All beers must be kept refrigerated at all times too. I’ve never known that that was a requirement for any type of beers. I’m not a huge beer drinker but I loved the Hummin’ Bird. Very smooth. We finished with our samples, a few munchies, and hanging out again in the beer garden. I wish Red Oak the best — they really have a vision and great beer.
