«I am a big woman. I need big hair.» Aretha Franklin I found Alex’s Hair Design through a search on Aveda’s website. I’m surprised I didn’t know about it sooner, or that the shop hasn’t been already reviewed on Unilocal. It’s been in business, at the same location, for over seven years. The current owner is a delightful woman who seems to be the smarts behind the scenes; I’m not sure if she cuts/colors hair. I chatted with her as she was placing purple hair extensions for a(quite pleased) young girl who was on her way to a local fundraising dance event. I used to go to Lords & Ladies for haircuts, but the professional color line at L&L is heavy on chemicals and(hiss-hiss) tested on animals which I can’t overlook. I went to Alex’s wanting brown color over the natural brassy red in my hair; to trim some of the inherent curl that I find myself straightening anyway, and I didn’t say anything about my eyebrows. I walked out with redder, shorter hair and scrimpy brows. A little pushy; service wasn’t terrible, but I didn’t walk away thinking it was a nice, relaxing experience. They say that short hair exudes confidence, and I have yet to visit a salon where the stylist hasn’t tried to talk me into a blunt pixie cut which I’m certain would just make me look like a short man, a mushroom top or someone with a good idea on her head. Anything is better than the infamous bang cloud, so for that I was grateful.
